Description
Role: Backup Recovery Engineer
Location: USA Remote
Visa: U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder); final verification required
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Assess backup and recovery architecture, including protection policies, schedules, retention, repositories, media servers, agents, replication and cloud tiers.
· Review vulnerability findings and vendor advisories affecting backup servers, appliances, agents and management consoles; plan and execute approved remediation.
· Administer enterprise backup platforms such as Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, Rubrik, Cohesity, Veeam or equivalent across physical, virtual and cloud workloads.
· Protect Windows, Linux, VMware, Nutanix, databases and enterprise applications using policy-based backup and recoverability controls.
· Perform and document file, VM, database and bare-metal restore tests; validate recovery against required RPO and RTO targets.
· Implement ransomware-resilient controls including immutability, isolation, encryption, MFA/RBAC, privileged-access restrictions and secure retention.
· Troubleshoot failed jobs, performance issues, repository capacity, connectivity, agent compatibility and replication problems through resolution.
· Coordinate maintenance windows, change records, testing and communications with application, infrastructure, security, storage and vendor teams.
· Maintain recovery runbooks, operational procedures, asset coverage records, exception logs, dashboards and audit evidence.
· Participate in disaster-recovery exercises, incident response, capacity forecasting and after-hours or on-call support when required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· 5+ years of enterprise backup, recovery or data-protection engineering experience in a large production environment.
· Hands-on experience with at least one enterprise platform such as Commvault, NetBackup, Rubrik, Cohesity or Veeam, plus familiarity with a second platform.
· Experience protecting VMware and/or Nutanix workloads, Windows and Linux servers, and common enterprise databases or applications.
· Deep understanding of full, incremental, synthetic and snapshot-based protection; retention, deduplication, replication and recovery workflows.
· Experience patching and hardening backup infrastructure, remediating vulnerabilities and validating post-change operations.
· Knowledge of ransomware recovery, immutable storage, air-gap or logical isolation, encryption, MFA/RBAC and least-privilege administration.
· Working knowledge of RPO, RTO, disaster recovery, business continuity, change control and audit evidence.
· Strong troubleshooting, automation, documentation and stakeholder communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience with AWS Backup, Azure Backup, cloud object storage and hybrid-cloud data protection.
· Automation with PowerShell, Python, Ansible, REST APIs or vendor orchestration tools.
· Experience integrating backup platforms with ServiceNow, monitoring, CMDB and security tooling.
· Veritas, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity, Veeam, VMware, Nutanix, AWS or Azure certification.
· Experience in utilities, critical infrastructure or other regulated environments.
