Reports To: Service Manager.
Position Type: Full Time.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 3 schedules between 7am-7pm.
Work Location: Headquarters, Kansas City, MO.

Job Summary:
The Automotive Technician is responsible for performing inspections, maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and vehicle upfitting activities on automobiles, vans, buses, and fleet vehicles. Technicians are assigned responsibilities based on skill level, experience, certifications, and demonstrated competency. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant vehicle operation while maintaining high standards of workmanship, productivity, and customer service.

Career Progression Levels:
Automotive Technician I (Entry Level):
Technician I employees perform routine maintenance and basic repairs while developing diagnostic and technical skills under the guidance of senior technicians. 

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Perform oil changes, lubrication services, and fluid checks.
  • Rotate tires and perform basic tire services.
  • Complete preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Replace basic wear items including filters, batteries, belts, brake pads, and wiper systems.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to identify basic vehicle issues.
  • Follow maintenance checklists and service procedures.
  • Assist higher-level technicians with repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Perform vehicle transport and portering duties as needed.

Education & Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of automotive service job experience or completion of an accredited automotive service program.
 
Automotive Technician II (Intermediate Level):
Technician II employees perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and moderate-level repairs with minimal supervision. They are expected to independently complete most routine service and repair work.

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose and repair light-duty steering and suspension systems.
  • Service and repair braking systems.
  • Perform comprehensive inspections and maintenance services.
  • Conduct tune-ups and drivability repairs.
  • Perform diesel maintenance including oil and filter services.
  • Diagnose and service automotive HVAC systems.
  • Complete multi-point inspections and repair recommendations.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Document work orders and repair findings accurately.
  • Assist with training and mentoring Technician I employees. 

Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2-5 years of automotive service job experience.
  • Ability to perform repairs independently.
  • Possession of most tools required for assigned job duties.
 
Automotive Technician III (Senior Level):
Technician III employees perform the most advanced diagnostics, repairs, and fleet service work. They serve as technical resources for complex repairs and specialized vehicle systems. 

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Perform advanced diagnostics on electrical, drivability, and computer-controlled systems.
  • Complete engine, transmission, and heavy-line repairs.
  • Repair and diagnose diesel systems.
  • Service and repair HVAC systems.
  • Perform vehicle alignments.
  • Service heavy-duty suspension and braking systems.
  • Conduct welding and exhaust repairs.
  • Perform vehicle upfitting and modifications.
  • Troubleshoot complex vehicle concerns using advanced diagnostic technology.
  • Participate in advanced training and technical development.
  • Provide technical guidance to lower-level technicians.
  • Ensure repairs meet company, DOT, and safety standards. 
 
Experience Requirements:
  • Seven (7) or more years of automotive technician experience.
  • Advanced diagnostic and repair proficiency.
  • Possession of most tools necessary to perform assigned work.

Automotive Technician IV (Shop Foreman):

Job Summary:
The Automotive Technician IV – Service Shop Foreman oversees daily operations within the service center shop while actively participating in hands-on repair, maintenance, and diagnostic work. This role ensures high-quality service, efficient workflow, and adherence to safety and operational standards. The foreman serves as the primary point of coordination between technicians, service advisors, and management to maintain productivity and customer satisfaction.

Essential Functions: 
  • Lead and supervise shop technicians, providing direction, assigning jobs, and monitoring performance and productivity.
  • Perform hands-on mechanical and diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment as needed to support shop workload.
  • Coordinate workflow to ensure timely completion of repairs, proper job sequence, and efficient use of labor hours.
  • Inspect completed work for quality, accuracy, and compliance with service standards.
  • Train, mentor, and support technicians, including onboarding new hires and developing skill sets.
  • Maintain shop safety standards, enforce OSHA and company policies, and ensure proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Communicate with service advisors and management regarding job status, parts needs, delays, and customer concerns.
  • Assist with troubleshooting complex issues, providing technical expertise and guidance.
  • Monitor shop equipment, schedule maintenance, and ensure tools are in proper working condition.
  • Support inventory control, including parts usage, returns, and core tracking.
  • Document work performed, ensuring accurate repair orders, time tracking, and compliance with company procedures.

Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Proven experience as a lead technician, senior mechanic, or shop foreman in a service center or similar environment.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of automotive, heavy-duty, bus, fleet, or diesel technician experience, including demonstrated advanced diagnostic capability and prior experience providing technical guidance or leadership in a shop environment.
  • Demonstrated mastery of diesel engine diagnostics, electrical/multiplex systems, aftertreatment systems, drivability concerns, HVAC controls, brake systems, steering/suspension, chassis systems, and safety-critical inspections.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate workflow, assign repair priorities, support technician productivity, and reinforce quality and safety standards.

Essential Functions: All Levels:

  • ASE Certifications.

  • Experience with diesel engines, buses, vans, and fleet vehicles.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Technician IV only.

Safety-Sensitive Position:
This position is considered safety-sensitive because employees maintain, inspect, repair, and test vehicles and equipment critical to safe operation. Failure to perform duties safely and effectively could pose a direct threat to the health and safety of employees, customers, or the public. Employees may be subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with company policy and applicable law.

Physical Demands:
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and work in confined spaces. 
  • Work underneath vehicles and in awkward positions. 
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. 
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures. 
  • Wear required personal protective equipment. 
  • Exposure to automotive chemicals, lubricants, fuels, and cleaning agents. 
  • Exposure to loud noise levels requiring hearing protection.
