LOCATION: Sumter, SC
The Automation Systems Engineer supports automation initiatives at the Sumter, SC manufacturing facility producing permanent magnets for automotive and commercial applications. This role implements and maintains automation technologies to improve manufacturing performance and align with operational goals, collaborating closely with Operations and Maintenance.
Manage interfaces between manufacturing equipment and execution systems.
Install, configure, maintain, and optimize automation systems.
Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and industry standards.
Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, MES, and IT teams.
Translate functional requirements into system configurations.
Lead continuous improvement efforts to reduce downtime and increase efficiency.
Serve as a technical liaison for customers and vendors.
Manage automation projects from design through startup and support.
Design and develop PLC, SCADA, HMI, historian, and control systems.
Program and configure Rockwell Automation platforms (ControlLogix, Servo, Optix HMI).
Support system integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, and qualification.
Optimize process control systems, loops, and networks.
Provide remote, phone, and onsite technical support.
Support manufacturing and facility projects with production teams.
Mentor team members and provide technical guidance.
Ensure systems meet specifications and customer requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Automation, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
5–10 years of automation engineering and project management experience.
Experience managing large-scale projects (>$10M preferred).
Strong background in controls, automation, and electrical systems.
Hands-on commissioning experience with production lines.
Experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, industrial networking, and related software.
Extensive knowledge of Rockwell Automation platforms; Ignition preferred.
Strong troubleshooting, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to adapt to new technologies and balance technical/project duties.
Willingness to travel internationally.
Travel: Up to 10% domestic and international.
English required; German preferred.
