General Statement of Duties

The Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) Coordinator is responsible for the administrative functions of the ATE program, with a primary focus on managing the civil infraction process. This position ensures the accurate processing of citations, maintains compliance with legal and procedural requirements, and provides operational support to the ATE Program Manager. The ATE Coordinator also serves as a key point of coordinating communication with the Police Department, vendors, community stakeholders, and the public, to ensure efficient, consistent, and transparent program operations. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Associate's degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Business, or a related field (Bachelor's degree preferred); and
  • Two (2) years of experience in administrative work, public service, or law enforcement support; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Some experience with citation processing, traffic enforcement, or civil infractions preferred.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer background check, physical examination and drug screen.
  • Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Review, verify and process ATE-generated citations for accuracy and compliance with traffic laws. Manage the civil infraction process, including preparing and issuing violation notices to offenders.
  • Track citation status from issuance through resolution, including payments, appeals, and dismissals. Respond to inquiries from the public regarding ATE violations, procedures, and appeals.
  • Assist offenders with navigating the civil infraction process, including explaining payment and hearing options. Coordinate with the courts, administrative hearing officers, and legal counsel for contested cases.
  • Assist the ATE Program Manager with monitoring program performance, generating reports, and tracking key metrics. Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping of all ATE-related activities, including citations, appeals, and vendor communication.
  • Verify that all citations meet legal standards and are issued in accordance with relevant laws and policies. Ensure timely processing of all civil infractions within established guidelines.
  • Assist with maintaining ATE program files and managing databases related to citations and enforcement activities.
  • Occasionally interact with the public, including handling disputes or inquiries.
  • Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
