Summary

The Sergeant will be responsible for assisting with the daily functions of the Sheriff's Office including supervising law enforcement personnel providing law enforcement services and protection to the citizens of Tarrant County. Duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of personnel assigned to the Tarrant Regional Auto Crimes Task Force and the coordination of investigative, enforcement, prevention, intelligence, and educational activities. This supervisory role will be heavily involved with the management of the grant adhering to operational constraints.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Schedules assigned subordinate personnel and adheres to assigned duty hours.
• Conducts unit briefings.
• Assists superiors and/or designated personnel with administrative duties.
• Supervises operational activities of assigned subordinate personnel.
• Administers guidance and direction for criminal investigators to achieve operational grant goals.
• Monitors unit caseloads and major investigations.
• Notifies senior managers of major criminal investigations, personnel issues, conflicts and other extraordinary happenings in a timely manner.
• Monitors and enforces all Sheriffs Office and unit policies, procedures, and rules.
• Monitors employee use of communications and information systems to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, policies and procedures for their use.
• Evaluates duty performance of assigned subordinate personnel.
• Uses information systems to perform essential duties including employee performance evaluation, incident investigation and review, use of resources, workload and performance measures, and to create/prepare documents and reports.
• Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries.
• Reviews reports, case files, search and arrest warrants and subpoenas.
• Assigns and/or participates in the investigations of criminal cases.
• Prepares administrative reports for grant-reporting purposes.
• Assists with grant preparation and may represent the Sheriff's Office in grant meetings.
• Provides court testimony as required.
• Coordinates regional intelligence-sharing efforts and meetings
• Maintains physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position.
• Uses reasonable force when necessary.
• Communicates with internal and external customers, including contract agencies.
• Completes mandatory paperwork.
• Produces legal documents required by assigned duties.
• Attends and completes all training required by statute or TCOLE to maintain required certification(s) and licenses.

• Must be proficient in the use of defensive tactics requiring physical force including the use of intermediate impact weapons and firearms.
• Must have a working knowledge of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Penal Code, Transportation Code and other State statutes, and County ordinances.
• Must have a working knowledge needed to use basic Microsoft Office Suite software functions (word processing and spreadsheet).

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum four (4) fill-time consecutive years of law enforcement experience with a minimum of two (2) full-time years in criminal investigations.
• Must have Texas Basic Peace Officer Certification (Intermediate preferred) and be licensed in good standing as a Peace Officer in the state of Texas.
• Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License and/or obtain a license within 30 days.

Preferred Requirements:

• Associate's degree or equivalent preferred but not required.
• Experience investigating auto crimes
• Experience coordinating field operations
• Proficiency working within multiagency teams
• Proficiency in drafting, reviewing, and executing legal process (search warrants, subpoenas, and other court orders).

Physical Demands and Work Environment & Other Requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, sit, walk, run on occasion, strenuously climb stairs or ladders and lift up to 100 lbs. Must be able to exert physical force when necessary and lift, twist and throw persons during defensive tactics regularly May sit at a work station for prolonged periods of time writing, typing, using a computer, or telephoning citizens or personnel for information. May lift to pick up evidence and run/fight to apprehend fugitives daily. May be exposed to communicable diseases.

There is exposure to household type cleaning agents (such as diluted bleach, alcohol based window cleaner, chlorine based cleanser); and occasional exposure to pesticides. There is occasional exposure to inmate control devices that emit pepper agents via aerosol spray, gel or foam. There is the potential of exposure to toxic smoke.

SPECIAL ADA PHYSICAL STATEMENT:

Applicants must demonstrate distant and near vision of 20/30 corrected or uncorrected in each eye and must be able to read typewritten material with or without glasses. Must be able to see without glasses (with or without the use of contact lenses) in order to wear an air mask; and in order to be able to see to defend themselves and others; applicants with uncorrected vision worse than 20/100 (Snellen) must wear contact lens while working; Must be able to distinguish basic colors (without the use of x-chrome lenses); Must be able to hear the conversational voice, with or without the use of hearing aid.
