About the Agency

The Department of Audit employs some 120 persons and is one of the largest auditing firms in the state. In addition to accountants, the Agency employs analysts, law enforcement officers, and various other professional staff. The Office is widely regarded as the definitive authority in matters pertaining to the use of public funds, and the recommendations offered by its auditors and other expert personnel are respected throughout the state. The employees of the Department of Audit are mindful of the grave responsibility of upholding the public trust and strive to maintain the level of competence expected of them by virtue of their positions. The Mississippi Constitution grants specific duties and powers related to prescribing systems of accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting for public offices in Mississippi. It also enumerates other statutory responsibilities including study and analysis of existing public managerial policies and practices; pre-audit and post-audit functions; investigation of suspected fiscal violations; recovering misspent and stolen funds; and a variety of related duties and responsibilities. About the Position

This position is in the Government Accountability Division (GAD) of the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor. The Division supports the State Auditor by objectively evaluating State programs, policies, and activities and the corresponding fiscal impact(s). The GAD Auditor Analyst reports to the Deputy Director of the Government Accountability Division. This position is responsible for applying auditing and/or research skills to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of public programs and policies. The Auditor Analyst will conduct policy and program research, analyze policy, regulations, and data sets, and contribute to the design and preparation of technical assistance and related issue briefs and tools. An Auditor Analyst is expected to be able to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the following: • Gather, analyze, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data from various sources. • Help develop a range of high-quality written materials, including but not limited to GAD reports and policy memos. • Interpret information from academic and government sources. • Conduct state and federal policy scans. • Work directly with state/local government agencies, community-based organizations, and professional organizations to gather background information and relevant data. • Represent GAD and the OSA at meetings with agency officials, contractors, grantees, etc., and at professional conferences. • Participate in presentations to external and internal groups. • Perform other duties as assigned. This position does not report to a CPA.

  • Understanding of basic government structure/functions and the policymaking process in Mississippi. • Ability to summarize complex policy issues concisely and clearly. • Familiarity with statistical methods, including qualitative and quantitative analysis and statistical sampling. • Ability to work as a member of a team. • Willingness to edit the work product of peers and receive constructive feedback from peers. • Ability to juggle multiple research projects at once. • Ability to define problem areas, analyze data and/or situations, draw logical conclusions, and recommend effective courses of action. • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including overseeing the preparation of comprehensive work papers as well as clear and concise reports. • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, auditees, external contractors, management staff, and co-workers. • Ability to understand a variety of management/operational data/documentation. • Ability to conduct research using a variety of research techniques; collect, compile, analyze, and interpret data. • Exemplary interpersonal skills, judgment, and professionalism. • Willingness to learn and grow professional skills and capabilities. • Ability to perform job functions independently, objectively, and within set time frames.

Preferred Qualifications
