POSITION OVERVIEW
UNICON International is seeking an Associate Fiber Technician to support a large-scale, mission-critical data center connectivity project. This opportunity is ideal for an early-career technician with hands-on exposure to fiber optics, structured cabling, telecommunications, low-voltage systems, or data center infrastructure who is interested in continuing to develop their fiber testing and troubleshooting skills.
The Associate Fiber Technician will work alongside experienced technicians performing fiber installation, connectivity verification, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation while adhering to strict safety and quality standards.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Install, pull, route, dress, organize, and label fiber-optic and copper cabling
- Assist with fiber termination and splicing activities
- Perform basic fiber testing and connectivity verification
- Assist with circuit auditing and validation
- Clean and inspect fiber connectors
- Utilize or develop proficiency with OTDR, optical power meters, VFLs, fiber scopes, and related equipment
- Trace cables and verify connections against port maps and project documentation
- Identify and escalate failed tests and connectivity issues
- Support rack, patch-panel, pathway, and cable-management activities
- Read and follow drawings, cable schedules, port maps, and work instructions
- Document completed work and testing results accurately
- Follow all safety, PPE, ESD, quality, and site requirements
WHAT's NEEDED
- 2–2.5 years of relevant experience
- 2 years working directly in a Data Center environment
- Hands-on exposure to fiber optics, telecommunications, structured cabling, low voltage, electrical, or data center infrastructure
- Basic understanding of fiber and copper cabling
- Strong mechanical and technical aptitude
- Ability to follow technical documentation and detailed instructions
- Strong attention to safety and quality
- Willingness to learn fiber testing and troubleshooting techniques
- Steel-toed safety boots are required on the first day of employment and must be worn in accordance with site safety requirements.
What You’ll Learn (Growth Path)- Fiber optic fundamentals (installation, termination, testing)
- Use of testing tools such as light meters and OTDR (on-the-job training)
- Data center infrastructure standards and best practices
- Advanced troubleshooting and cable management techniques
OSHA 10, BICSI, ETA, FOA, or related certifications are a plus.
