The City of Round Rock is looking for an Associate Civil Engineer who is ready to apply their engineering education and experience in a dynamic municipal environment. This role is perfect for professionals who want to grow their technical skills, gain exposure to a wide range of engineering functions, and make a direct impact on how a thriving community develops.
In this position, you'll review development plans, conduct engineering studies, respond to citizen concerns, and collaborate with contractors, developers, and internal teams. You'll work alongside experienced Staff, Senior, and Principal Engineers and other professionals who are committed to mentorship-helping you build confidence, deepen your expertise, and take on increasingly complex responsibilities as your career and knowledge of land development matures.
Whether you're a recent graduate or have years of engineering experience, municipal work offers something unique: stability, growth, and the chance to contribute to projects that matter to thousands of residents.
Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.
Examples of Duties
In this role, you will support a variety of engineering, planning, and development activities, including:
Responding to citizen, business, and agency inquiries related to engineering issues by gathering data, conducting research, and recommending solutions
Reviewing development projects-including site plans, plats, utilities, drainage studies, TIAs (Traffic Impact Analyses), flood studies, wastewater capacity studies, and more-with guidance from senior staff·
Meeting with engineers, developers, contractors, and internal staff to discuss code interpretation, project challenges, timelines, and engineering standards
Providing technical comments and stipulations to ensure compliance with City design requirements, ordinances, and policies
Assisting in amending and implementing city ordinances, manuals, guidelines, and policies related to engineering and development
Maintaining and updating reference materials, checklists, forms, reports, development packets, and technical documents
Supporting boards and commissions by providing administrative and technical assistance
Conveying review comments between internal departments and external stakeholders to ensure consistent project communication
This position offers exposure to a broad range of engineering topics, from land development and transportation, to drainage and utilities, to permit review and capital project support.
Experience and Training
Who You Are
You're curious, motivated, and ready to learn. You enjoy problem-solving, tackling technical questions, and communicating clearly with both colleagues and external contacts. You're organized, detail-oriented, and excited to see how engineering decisions shape real-world outcomes in neighborhoods, commercial developments, and public infrastructure.
You'll thrive here if you:
Enjoy working with people as much as solving engineering problems
Communicate clearly in writing, visually, and verbally
Want mentorship and opportunities to expand your engineering skill set
Work well on a team and value collaboration
Like balancing office work, meetings, research, and technical analysis
Municipal experience is not required; we're ready to support motivated engineers starting or changing their career path.
