Job Summary
Responsible for interviewing and identifying indigent individuals who have been arrested and are in custody during weekend proceedings. Qualified indigent individuals shall have an attorney appointed during the weekend magistrate process and shall be permitted to have indigency considered as a factor in determining reasonable bail.
Major Duties
- Processes all front-end court appointments of attorneys for the Magistrate Court.
- Determines the appropriate documents to present to the Magistrate to facilitate the arrested person's appearance before the Magistrate and determine eligibility for a court-appointed attorney.
- Answers questions in person, by email, and by telephone regarding indigent individuals in custody.
- Prepares and routes appropriate Orders of Indigency and court appointments to the Magistrate, appointed attorneys, and pretrial services.
- Manages and monitors the Magistrates court appointment list of attorneys.
- Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of legal terminology and the criminal judicial process and procedures.
- Skill in the use of computers and Microsoft Office programs.
- Skill in the operation of standard office equipment.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Must have at least two ( 2 ) years of work experience in the judiciary field.

Complexity/Scope of Work
- Conducts face-to-face interviews with inmates to determine eligibility for court-appointed attorney representation.
- Performs clerical duties, including completing and organizing documents for the Magistrate's electronic review.
- After court proceedings have concluded, electronically file documents in the Odyssey case management system.
Physical Demands/Work Environment

- Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
- Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
- Working in noisy environments.
- Working in adverse environmental conditions is expected.

Other Requirements/Information
- Must possess a valid and current Texas drivers license.
- Must obtain a Notary Public bond within a reasonable time frame, provided by Webb County.
- Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job. Pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), and criminal background checks are required.
- This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
- Position is grant-funded for one (1) year unless the grant is approved for a second term by the TIDC or Webb County funds the position moving forward.
Valid Texas Driver's License*
- If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.
