Summary

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for at least one full-time Assistant Teaching Professor. This is a nonrenewable (one-year), full-time academic-year appointment with a start date of August 2026.

The Department of Philosophy is an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences. The vision for our College, aligned with the university's strategic plan, is to ensure that our students graduate career-ready to meet the world's challenges, and that our faculty research and creative activity contribute to the public good. We achieve this through robust collaboration across departmental boundaries, with particular attention given to increasing experiential learning for our undergraduate and graduate students and connecting our scholarly and creative work to the needs of our region. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute excellence in teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service toward achieving inclusive excellence throughout the university and to the greater community. The College is committed to faculty success, providing resources and support within the Dean's Office and through collaboration with Arts and Sciences departments and schools, leadership teams in other colleges, and university-serving partners such as the Center for Faculty Excellence. The Philosophy Department at BGSU offers a major in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL), with an option for a specialization in philosophy. Essential Functions

The primary responsibility for this position is to teach four undergraduate courses per semester in core areas of philosophy and/or PPEL, including history of philosophy, history of political economy, and formal methods. The successful candidate will also teach introductory undergraduate courses in philosophy, including but not limited to introduction to philosophy, introduction to ethics, and courses in applied ethics, e.g., medical/health care ethics. Responsibilities also include providing service at the department, college, or university level.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or related discipline (e.g., Political Science, Economics). ABDs are eligible to apply but the applicant must satisfy all the requirements for the doctoral degree before August 1, 2026
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses in core areas of philosophy and/or PPEL as the instructor of record or as a Graduate Teaching Assistant

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as instructor of record for philosophy courses, including introduction to logic, introduction to ethics, or history of philosophy
  • Experience teaching an undergraduate class in PPEL as the instructor of record.
