High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Eight years in grounds maintenance/landscaping or in a related field, with at least one year of supervisory experience. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Performs supervisory and hands on work in Horticulture & Landscape Design and related areas. Assigns and schedules the work of Landscape Services workers and ensures work completion and quality.
Primary Responsibilities
Assists in the supervision and management of landscape maintenance, planning, and design activities across all Sam Houston State University campuses. Oversees the care and development of planted beds, landscape enhancements, and horticultural projects to ensure aesthetically pleasing, sustainable, and functional campus environments. Manages greenhouse and nursery operations, including plant propagation, cultivation, irrigation systems, temperature control, and ventilation. Utilizes extensive knowledge of native plants, trees, and plant identification to select and evaluate appropriate plant materials for campus landscapes. Supervises, schedules, and participates in the work of Horticulture and Landscape staff. Develops, presents, and oversees landscape design projects from concept through implementation while researching plant and tree performance to support long-term campus beautification and sustainability goals. Conducts regular inspections of campus landscapes to ensure quality standards are met, identifies areas requiring maintenance or future development, and assists crews as needed. Maintains a safe work environment by enforcing proper work practices, training employees on safe equipment operation and landscaping procedures, and ensuring compliance with departmental standards. Provides leadership and guidance to staff by assigning work, monitoring performance, advising on special projects, and assisting with hiring, training, and disciplinary processes. Maintains accountability for department resources by securing facilities, vehicles, and gates. Responsible for requisitioning supplies, maintaining inventory records, and conducting inventories of horticultural materials, landscaping equipment, and related assets. Performs additional duties as assigned in support of university operations, special events and campus enhancement initiatives.
Other Specifications
Knowledge of how ecological conditions can affect a proposed design. Requires inspection knowledge and experience. Basic computer skills are required. Ability to communicate efficiently is required. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscape design & horticulture is required. Proficiency in all duties performed. Working conditions involve exposure to elements such as dirt, dust, heat, cold, chemicals, noise, vibration, and congested work area. Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and other University employees and students. Ability to provide direction, training and performance reviews to subordinates is required.
Uniforms and identification badges are provided by the University according to departmental policy.
Weekends, holidays, and extended hours during emergencies may be required. Alertness and careful attention is required to prevent injury to others.
Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the University's insurance carrier is required.
