Basic Function

Under the direction of the Superintendent/President, the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Academic Affairs serves as the Chief Instructional Officer and leads the planning, development, and implementation of instructional programs. The Vice President/Assistant Superintendent of Academic Affairs provides leadership, direction, and support in delivering instructional programs and services; assumes responsibility for personnel and personnel practices in academic areas; oversees operational services and activities; and works effectively with outside agencies. May assume the responsibility of the Superintendent/President in the absence of the Superintendent/President, in accordance with Board Policy 2432.

Minimum Qualifications

Education And Experience:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university; doctorate degree preferred, AND
  • Three (3) years of administrative experience or other related experience in an institution of higher education. Teaching experience is required, AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS:

Provide Leadership in the following:

  1. Planning, coordinating, supervising and evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of instructional programs and services; E

  2. Developing and implementing the Educational Master Plan; E

  3. Developing, implementing and monitoring an enrollment management plan to achieve and maintain enrollment targets; E

  4. Developing, implementing and assessing student learning outcomes in all instructional programs and services; E

  5. Directing research related to student learning; developing new and revised programs to reflect changing needs and priorities; E

  6. Planning the implementation of academic support services to achieve retention of students and maximize academic success; E

  7. Overseeing the faculty and staff development program. E

  8. Assist in preparation and implementation of accreditation reports. Serve as Accreditation Liaison Officer as needed. E

PERSONNEL AND PERSONNEL PRACTICES:

  1. Exercises direct supervision over instructional Deans and Directors; E

  2. Selects, trains, counsels, supervises and evaluates instructional program personnel; E

  3. Attracts and retains instructional personnel that are outstanding and diverse; E

OPERATIONAL SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES:

  1. Develops and prioritizes budget recommendations for instructional areas and assists in the administration of the divisional budgets; E

  2. Provides leadership in collective bargaining negotiations and contract administration;

  3. Participates in a variety of campus committees and task forces; E

  4. Attends Board of Trustees' meetings; E

  5. Makes presentations to internal and external community; E

  6. Provides input on issues affecting assigned functions; E

  7. Works effectively with the Board of Trustees within parameters established by the Superintendent/President. E

  8. Works in partnership with local school districts and community groups. E

INTERACTION WITH OUTSIDE AGENCIES:

  1. Provides leadership, support and direct involvement in the College's various accreditations and state agencies; E

  2. Builds relationships and partnerships with individuals, agencies and organizations involved in education, business, government and other enterprises that may help advance the mission and goals of the District. E

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

Working Conditions

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • As an exempt employee, the incumbent may be asked to work variable schedules. Must be able to travel for meetings and College functions.
  • The incumbent must have the ability to get to a variety of locations. This is usually accomplished by driving a vehicle to said locations. If operating a vehicle, the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver's license is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

  • Ability to work in a standard office environment including ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift 20 lbs.; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
