The Sport Management Department at SUNY Cortland invites applications for an on-campus tenure-track Assistant Professor position.

This is a generalist position designed to attract candidates with diverse professional backgrounds across sport management. Applicants are encouraged to identify their primary area(s) of expertise within their application materials. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:

Major Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate sport management courses
  • Advise and mentor students in sport management.

Scholarship / Creative Activity

  • Engage in scholarly work and activities that involve undergraduate or graduate students as appropriate to the application and receipt of tenure.

Service

  • Provide service to the department, the University, and professional organizations in Sport Management.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

  • Reports to the Department Chair.
  • Works collaboratively with department faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications

PhD, terminal degree, or doctoral candidate who is all but dissertation (ABD) in Sport Management or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence in university- or college-level teaching across undergraduate and online graduate modalities.
  • Ability to teach across core curriculum areas and high-demand areas in the core curriculum
  • Minimum of three years of professional, applied experience within the sport industry.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding of sport management concepts, with specific expertise in high-demand areas within the department.
  • Ability to cultivate an equitable learning environment that values diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and learning styles.
  • Ability to maintain an active campus presence and build mentor-student relationships.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high-impact educational practices, including case-based learning, client-based projects, simulations, and field experience integration in curriculum.
  • Demonstrated skill in designing, delivering, and assessing undergraduate and online graduate courses.
  • Some proficiency in integrating industry platforms into coursework (e.g., CRM/ticketing software, digital content creation tools, sport analytics platforms, or interactive business simulations)
  • Strong interpersonal skills in guiding undergraduate students through academic progression
  • Ability to establish a productive research agenda that complements teaching and contributes to the broader sport management discipline.
