Bring your creative vision and design expertise to South Dakota State University! The School of Design invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice of Interior Design. We are seeking a collaborative educator with a strong foundation in interior design or interior architecture and specialized expertise in one or more content areas such as materials, computer aided design software (Revit, Sketchup, Enscape), codes and regulations, design expertise in a curricular studio area (commercial, hospitality, education, civic, health care, residential). The position is typically 90% teaching and 10% service. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a tenure-track, 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

The School of Design includes accredited degrees in the visual arts: graphic design, and studio arts and the built environment: architecture, interior design and landscape architecture. Collectively, School faculty form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.

SDSU offers a 4-year CIDA and NASAD accredited Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design degree. The mission of Interior Design is to prepare graduates for professional practice or advanced study in interior design through research informed, design thinking infused and practice-based projects and opportunities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses within the professional curriculum covering disciplinary content such as materials, computer aided design software (Revit, Sketchup, Enscape), codes and regulations, design expertise in a curricular studio area (commercial, hospitality, education, civic, health care, residential).
  • Provide service to the discipline, university, and community.
  • Teach in multi-disciplinary courses within the School of Design.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelors degree in interior design or closely related field or international equivalent, and a Masters in related field OR;
  • A bachelors degree in interior design or closely related field or international equivalent and a minimum of 5 years, full-time professional practice experience.
  • Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Potential to contribute service to the profession, school or university.
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
