Position Details
Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of Human Sciences at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) invites applications from qualified candidates for a 9-month appointment as an Assistant Professor of Practice in Interior Design beginning Spring 2027.
The Department of Human Sciences is one of six academic units in the College of Health Sciences, and the Interior Design program is one of three and the largest undergraduate programs in the department with 120 students. The department offers a B.S., B.A., and a minor in Interior Design, and holds accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate courses in the Interior Design BA/BS program. Courses will include teaching AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, and SketchUp software, foundation courses in applied design theory, and other studio and lecture courses as needed for the program. The appointment will include a 4/4 teaching load during the fall and spring semesters.
LOCATION:
There are multiple options for places to live near our campuses. The city of Huntsville is nestled in the East Texas Piney Woods and is centrally located on a direct route between Houston and Dallas. With a population of roughly 40,000 (excluding SHSU), Huntsville offers the simplicity of small-town life and easy access to surrounding larger cities including Conroe, The Woodlands, and Bryan/College Station. Full of Texas history and charm, this county seat is home to multiple museums, annual festivities, antique stores, year-round outdoor activities, vineyards, golf courses, lakes, and a beautiful state park. In a little over an hour after leaving the main campus, you can arrive in downtown Houston. It provides access to large entertainment venues and art museums. If you prefer life on the water, Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston are a short commute, and Galveston Island and the Gulf Coast are a two-hour drive.

Educational Requirements for the Position
The ideal candidate would possess a minimum of a Master's degree in interior design or a related field. Substantial and notable professional interior design practice experience, professional credentials, and state/national licensure as a design professional may be considered in lieu of a Master's degree.
Experience Required for the Position
Required: A minimum of five years of full-time experience in professional practice work or a combination of professional practice and university-level teaching experience is required. The demonstrated experience should be in interior design, architecture or a related discipline. Proficiency and ability to teach across a variety of design technology as noted in the position details is required and should be demonstrated in the candidate's professional portfolio sample.
Other Requirements for the Position
Preferred: Experience in workplace and/or healthcare design is preferred. Membership in at least one of the following professional organizations: IDEC, IIDA, ASID, or AIA is preferred. Additional credentials/certifications in any one or more of the following: NCIDQ, LEED-AP, AAHID, WELL-AP, or EDAC is preferred.
