Position Summary

Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands position in the Department of Music, beginning July 2027.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape and grow an athletic band program within a Division I university while contributing to the musical and educational environment of a nationally recognized residential liberal arts institution. The primary responsibility of the position is the leadership and development of Elon’s athletic bands, including the Fire of the Carolinas Marching Band and pep band, in close and sustained partnership with the Department of Athletics. Responsibilities will include hiring and supervising student and instructional staff; developing student leadership structures; managing inventory and equipment; overseeing budgets; and coordinating rehearsals, performances, travel, and other program activities. Additional responsibilities will include conducting the Wind Ensemble and/or Concert Band and may include teaching other courses, including in the Core Curriculum, based on the needs of the Department of Music and the candidate’s expertise.

The successful candidate will bring a clear vision for advancing the musical, educational, and public profile of Elon’s athletic and concert bands and for building an engaging band program that attracts and retains students from across the university while strengthening the Department of Music’s degree programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong conducting and rehearsal skills; effective communication and organizational abilities; the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, staff, Athletics, Admissions, alumni, donors, and other university partners; and effective recruitment strategies for the band and Department of Music. These efforts should include building positive relationships with prospective students, families, and secondary-school music educators.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

DMA in Music must be completed prior to the start of employment.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience directing collegiate bands, including marching and pep bands.
