    Position Summary:

    The Department of History and Social Sciences at Northern State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of History. This position offers the opportunity to teach and mentor students in Early American History through the Civil War era while contributing to the department's research culture and to university life more broadly. The anticipated start date is August 2027.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • PhD in History, with a specialty in Early American History through the Civil War era; any focus within that broad period is welcome. ABD candidates with a definite completion date prior to the position's start date may also be considered.
    • Experience teaching or developing digital public history projects is preferred.
    • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach twelve credit hours per semester in introductory and upper-level American History courses. Beyond the classroom, the successful candidate will serve as an active member of the department and university community by:
    • Directing student learning opportunities, including experiential learning and other applied student experiences
    • Building and sustaining connections with community businesses and organizations to support student learning
    • Advising students on career pathways • Supporting departmental student recruitment and retention efforts
    • Engaging in research and scholarly activity • Maintaining a visible, engaged presence within the department and across campus
