The Carpentry/Construction Assistant Professor is a skilled and motivated educator and licensed General Contractor with expertise in project supervision and hands-on skills required for residential construction. This position involves delivering lecture and hands-on instruction for the Associate of Applied Science and Certificate of Completion programs in Carpentry Apprenticeship and Construction Technology, as well as industry related certifications and short-term training offerings. The instructor will collaborate with adjunct faculty and concurrent enrollment programs and maintain strong industry partnerships to ensure program relevance and student success.
Sheridan College instructors are expected to use learner-centered teaching methods, contribute to institutional committees, and foster a collegial and student-focused learning environment. Evening and weekend instruction may be required
Reports To Dean of CTE Education/Qualifications
- Certificate, AAS or Bachelor degree in Carpentry Apprenticeship, Construction Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related degrees and/or relevant industry experience.
- A minimum of 2 - 12 years of documented hands-on-trade experience in the residential carpentry with an additional at least 3 years of experience in construction supervisory roles.
- City of Sheridan General Residential Contractor license and documented experience as a Journeyman Carpenter or ability to secure license within one year.
- Demonstrated commitment to technical education and the community college mission

Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management or Engineering
Hands‑on Carpentry Experience: 6 years
Construction Supervisory Experience: 3 years
General Residential Contractor License (City of Sheridan): Within 1 year of employment

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Operate power tools and heavy equipment.
- Climb ladders and scaffolding.
- Work on uneven terrain.
- Bend, kneel, crawl, squat, and reach overhead.
- Stand and walk for extended periods
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Demonstrate safe operation of construction equipment and tools.
- Wear required PPE.
- Instruction may occur during evenings, weekends, and outside faculty contract days..
- Work environments include classrooms, construction job sites and shops, and office settings.
- Some travel may be required

Job Duties

Instructional Duties
- Deliver classroom and lab/shop instruction in carpentry and residential construction.
- Develop and implement curriculum aligned with industry standards.
- Provide comprehensive safety training to students, enforce and maintain safety compliant practices, and conduct routine safety inspections of teaching spaces.
- Promptly report accidents/incidents, unsafe conditions, and safety documentation to appropriate college official.
- Maintain instructional equipment and facilities, including ensuring that machine guards and safety devices are functioning properly.
- Order and manage supplies and instructional materials.
- Organize field trips to construction job sites and residential manufacturing operations.
- Ensure program content remains current and relevant to industry needs.
- Participate in program review, assessment of student learning outcomes, and maintain documentation for accreditation.
Industry and Community Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with local businesses and industry partners.
- Establish and lead advisory committees with industry representation.
- Coordinate Carpentry Apprenticeship theory and skills education.
Student Support
- Advise and recruit students for the carpentry and construction programs.
- Monitor student academic progress and refer students to tutoring and student support services as appropriate.
- Maintain regular office hours and respond promptly to student communications..
- Support student organizations such as SkillsUSA.
- Mentor students toward employment opportunities.
Institutional Service
- Serve on college and departmental committees.
- Participate in scholarly activities that enhance the college's reputation.
- Contribute to the campus community and culture.
General Contractor Duties
- Serve as the responsible project manager for academic Construction program building projects, ensuring compliance with applicable building codes, permitting requirements, quality standards, budget expectations, and project timelines.
- Ensure compliance with college risk management procedures.
- Coordinate inspections with local building officials.
- Act as the central point of contact among clients, vendors, subcontractors, and inspectors to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to specifications.
- Manage daily job site operations and safety
- Subcontractor communication, sourcing and scheduling.
- Coordinate communication and reporting with client and Workforce Services.
- Maintain OSHA-compliant program-related construction sites and teaching areas
- Conduct routine safety inspections and investigate accidents and near misses.
