Winthrop Position Title Assistant Professor, Biology (Neuroscience) Job Description

Winthrop University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology with expertise in neuroscience for employment to begin August 16, 2027. The successful candidate will join a collegial environment that includes 14 full-time faculty and over 300 undergraduate majors. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching, a strong commitment to student learning and development, and the ability to establish an independent research program that attracts undergraduate students. This position requires a Ph.D. in a biological science or an equivalent area (ABDs will be considered). Review of applications will begin on October 23, 2026. Position Responsibilities

• Teach/develop courses in neuroscience and support the biology curriculum for a total of 12 contact hours per semester.
• Beyond neuroscience, teach courses that could include Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology, Scientific Process in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Integration of Biological Principles, and courses that contribute to the general education program.
• Active engagement in student-centered research in field of specialization.
• Advising and mentoring undergraduate students majoring in biology.
• Engage in professional service to the department, college, university, discipline, and community
• Other duties as assigned by the department chair.

Position Availability 08/16/2027 Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a biological science with a strong background in neuroscience. ABDs will be considered for appointment at the rank of instructor if all degree requirements are not completed by the expected start date of August 16, 2027.
• Ability to teach neuroscience and additional courses including Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology, Scientific Process in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Integration of Biological Principles, and courses that contribute to the general education program. Microscopy expertise is desirable.
• Evidence of an ability to establish an independent research program that will include undergraduate students.
• Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills and strong personal ethics for mentorship of student research projects.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications above, those with expertise in microscopy will be given preference.

Employment Conditions

This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment requiring daily on-campus contact; instructional duties during the academic year (9 months, Aug. 16 - May 15) come with the option to actively support a summer undergraduate research experience.
