Posting Summary

The School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) at Rutgers UniversityNewark invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track Professional Practice Professor appointment at the Assistant or Associate level. This is a 3-year appointment with the possibility of renewal.

The appointee will serve as Managing Director of the CLEAR Institute (Corrections Leadership, Evidence, and Advancement for Reform). The institute is designed to conduct collaborative, policy-relevant research and training that advances humane, effective, and equitable corrections and sentencing practices in partnership with state agencies, community organizations, NJ-STEP (New Jersey Scholarship and Transformative Education in Prisons), and graduate scholars.

The position combines research leadership, external funding development, partnership building, and applied scholarship, with some teaching responsibilities. The successful candidate will:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and operational management for the CLEAR Institute, including coordination of research initiatives, partnerships, and grant-funded projects.
  • Develop, secure funding for, lead, and participate in research on corrections-related topics across institutional and community settings.
  • Build and sustain collaborative partnerships with criminal justice agencies, community-based organizations, policymakers, and philanthropic funders.
  • Oversee grant administration and research project implementation, including supervision of research staff and coordination with university administrative units.
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students involved in Institute projects.
  • Contribute to the intellectual direction and visibility of the Institute through publications, presentations, convenings, and policy-relevant dissemination.
  • Teach two courses per academic year, at the undergraduate or graduate level, aligned with the candidates expertise and the schools needs.

The division of responsibilities for this position is as follows: Fundraising and outreach (20%); research and scholarship (50%); business management, event planning and communications (15%); classroom teaching of two courses per year (15%). These responsibilities may be amended upon written noti?cation, and additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in criminal justice, criminology, sociology, public policy, or a related field. They should have experience conducting applied, policy-relevant

research related to institutional and/or community corrections (e.g., incarceration, probation or parole supervision, reentry, or closely related areas). They should also have a record of securing external research funding, involvement in funded projects, and experience working with justice system and community stakeholders.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Please include a Strategy Statement (1-2 single-spaced pages). This would outline your approach to serving as the inaugural managing director, including strategies for proposal development, research partnerships, funder engagement, and budget management.
