Under the direction of the Head Coach, the First Assistant Coach supports the training, coaching, conditioning, recruiting, administrative and promotion/fundraising functions of Winthrop's NCAA Division I basketball team.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- At least five years of basketball coaching experience at the high school or college level.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- NCAA Division I coaching/playing experience.
- Five years of experience working with professional or intercollegiate men's basketball.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary
- Working knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations and the ability to apply them consistently.
- In-depth knowledge of basketball techniques and offensive and defensive strategies.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to train/mentor student-athletes one-to-one and in groups.

Job Summary
- Oversees, coordinates and monitors recruiting activities.
- Oversees Arms Recruiting Software and the program database, ensuring each prospect is entered into the database and workflow process.
- Organizes daily recruiting meetings and Big Board rankings for the next three recruiting classes.
- Coordinates weekly Reach Out sheets to allow the Head Coach to properly contact priority recruits and their families and inner circles.
- Plans and sends out recruiting materials in consultation with assistant coaches.
- Recruits athletes from junior colleges in assigned states.
- Travels and networks to recruit international athletes.
- Develops and nurtures relationships with NIL agents representing prospective recruits.
- Serves as a mentor for the team's student-athletes, helping them develop as students, athletes and professionals.
- Meets daily with athletes to assist in organizing and balancing their academic, athletic and personal schedules.
- Assists in planning and executing community engagement and service activities.
- Cultivates relationships with each athlete's family members and inner circle.
- Provides individual skill instruction during team practices and film sessions.
- Works closely with the Head Coach to actively engage and connect with the city of Rock Hill and greater Charlotte area.
- Establishes and cultivates important relationships with influential people in the community to create alliances.
- Serves as liaison to student organizations, such as Greek Life, Office of First Year Experience and Student Government, to create relationships with the basketball program.
- Studies and breaks down opponent game films to prepare Head Coach and team for upcoming games.
- Assists Head Coach in game planning and strategy implementation for assigned opponents.
- Works closely with the Associate Head Coach to coordinate, plan, negotiate and schedule games.
- Formulates and monitors scheduling grid.
- Negotiates guarantee games to generate revenue for the Athletic Department and Men's Basketball program.
- Oversees the fundraising arm of the Men's Basketball program by building rapport with current donors and cultivating new relationships.
- Fosters relationships with former players and spearheads initiatives to get them involved in the program.
Travel/Overtime Requirements Extensive travel and evening and weekend work. Telecommuting
Employees are not eligible for telecommuting/remote work during their 12-month probationary period. After that time, certain positions may be eligible for telecommuting/remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Winthrop policies.
