Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel provides high-level legal advice and services to the university on a wide range of legal issues in the context of higher education. Areas of practice include student issues, Title IX, policy review, contract review, data security, immigration, employment and other transactional legal work.

Essential Functions

Prepares written responses to government agencies regarding employment and student issues.

Provides legal advice relating to the review, drafting, and negotiation of complex contracts across a variety of colleges and departments, including academic affairs, student affairs, facilities, athletics, marketing and communication, development, and student enrollment. The Associate General Counsel will support the Office of Finance, specifically in the areas of risk, insurance, tax, and contracts.

Serves as a primary legal contact for assigned University departments, offering strategic guidance that aligns legal requirements with academic and administrative goals.

Provides counsel on legal issues involving students, including Title IX compliance, academic integrity, admission and financial aid, disability accommodations, student records, and student discipline.

Collaborates with appropriate University departments to develop, revise, and interpret internal University policies and procedures.

Oversees the University's policy bank and review process

Conducts legal research as directed regarding legal, policy, regulatory and compliance issues impacting higher education institutions

Translates complex legal frameworks into strategic, actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited American Bar Association law school.

Licensed to practice law in New York State.

Minimum of 6 years of legal experience.

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills

Outstanding communication skills with the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-legal professionals; strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

Strong understanding of confidentiality, records management, and appropriate handling of sensitive legal and personnel information.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally under pressure.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

Legal experience in higher education or nonprofit law.
