Assistant Electrical Designer (Telecommunications)

About the Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Electrical Designer to join their growing telecommunications design team in Kansas City, MO. This is an exciting contract-to-hire opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of telecommunications infrastructure projects supporting a variety of clients and industries.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Revit and AutoCAD, a strong understanding of telecommunications design principles, and the ability to contribute to project planning, design development, BIM coordination, and construction documentation efforts. This is not an entry-level position; candidates should possess demonstrated design experience and the ability to work independently on project assignments with limited oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in various phases of project planning, site evaluations, analytical design, report preparation, and construction documentation.
  • Design and model telecommunications systems including:
    • Physical pathway infrastructure (inside and outside plant)
    • Equipment room layouts
    • Structured cabling systems
    • Telecommunications spaces and pathways
  • Develop and manage 3D Revit models for telecommunications projects.
  • Lead the setup of telecommunications Revit models in accordance with project requirements and company standards.
  • Prepare engineering drawings from sketches, markups, verbal instructions, and design information using Revit and other CAD software.
  • Create initial designs, sketches, and drawing markups for ongoing projects.
  • Apply applicable design codes, standards, and project specifications.
  • Perform calculations, problem analysis, and component sizing for telecommunications systems.
  • Coordinate telecommunications BIM models with other engineering disciplines and project BIM coordinators.
  • Maintain telecommunications model health, data integrity, and quality standards.
  • Organize and maintain project drawings, revisions, and project documentation.
  • Complete assigned project tasks within established budgets and schedules.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, designers, and other team members to resolve design issues and meet project objectives.
  • Follow all company, client, and project design and drafting standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of related experience; OR
  • Associate Degree with a minimum of 3 years of related experience; OR
  • High School Diploma with a minimum of 4 years of progressive design and detailing experience.

Note: This position requires an experienced Assistant Designer. Entry-level candidates and detailers without design experience will not be considered.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience developing engineering design deliverables using 2D and 3D design applications.
  • Autodesk Revit experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications systems, infrastructure, and design practices.
  • Ability to prepare and modify engineering drawings with limited supervision.
  • Understanding of engineering design principles and coordination across multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize new software programs and design technologies.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality deliverables.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-discipline project environment.
