Position Overview
Our client is seeking an Assistant Electrical Designer to join their engineering and design team in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This contract-to-hire opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys supporting electrical design projects across a diverse portfolio of project types and clients.
The Assistant Electrical Designer will work as part of a multidisciplinary project team and assist with planning, site evaluations, electrical system design, drawing production, specifications, and construction documentation. This position provides an opportunity to develop technical design skills while working alongside experienced engineers, designers, and project managers.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with various phases of electrical design projects, including planning, site evaluations, analytical design, report preparation, specifications, proposal documentation, construction documentation, and electrical plans.
- Assist with the design of electrical systems, including electrical schematics, grid plan layouts, power distribution systems, lighting systems, protection and controls, and site and facility electrical design.
- Follow company, client, and project design and drafting standards.
- Assist with setting up electrical CAD configurations and procedures according to project requirements.
- Prepare engineering drawings from rough sketches, engineering notes, verbal instructions, and other design information using CAD software.
- Perform drawing production work involving problem analysis, design layouts, and calculations on assignments of varying complexity.
- Assist with drawing sequencing and presentation, sizing system components, and refining rough sketches into completed designs.
- Assist with initial rough designs, sketches, redlines, and markups on ongoing projects.
- Analyze reports, drawings, and test information to assist with planning and designing projects.
- Apply applicable design codes, standards, and specifications to project requirements.
- Complete and review design drawings within established scope, budget, and schedule requirements.
- Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and established deadlines.
- Incorporate project schedules, budgets, and design criteria into electrical designs and layouts.
- Organize and maintain project drawing revisions, plot files, and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers to resolve design and drawing issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with at least 2 years of related experience, or
- Associate degree with at least 3 years of related experience, or
- High school diploma or equivalent with at least 4 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
- Strong understanding of design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
- Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
- Basic knowledge of design, calculations, and electrical design systems.
- Basic knowledge of engineering theory and practices and the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to electrical design.
- Ability to operate related discipline-specific design software necessary to complete production tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- CAD drafting background.
- Some experience with GIS.
- Experience supporting electrical engineering, utility, industrial, infrastructure, or facility-related projects.
