Assistant Distribution Designer

Position Overview
We are seeking an Assistant Distribution Designer to join our client's team in Kansas City, MO. This position will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer and support the design of new, modified, and redeveloped 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects.
The Assistant Distribution Designer will collaborate with project teams throughout the design and construction process, developing and adapting distribution plans based on project requirements, budgets, design considerations, and client needs.
Responsibilities
- Assist with distribution design projects from conceptual development through completion.
- Prepare distribution voltage packages for overhead and underground projects, including equipment installation, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.
- Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bills of materials, and other project deliverables.
- Perform distribution-related calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading.
- Apply basic knowledge of NESC requirements and applicable utility standards, specifications, guides, and procedures.
- Research and compile project-related information and data.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other team members to meet project goals and deadlines.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously from initial assignment through completion.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with 2+ years of related experience, OR
- Associate degree with 3+ years of related experience, OR
- 4+ years of progressive detailing and design experience.
- 2+ years of design experience, preferably within the utility or power industry.
- Experience with distribution design software preferred, such as DDS, ArcFM, AUD, BOUD, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency with CAD, GIS, and other design software.
- Basic understanding of electrical distribution infrastructure and construction practices preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and critical-thinking skills with a methodical approach to problem solving.
