    Job Summary/Basic Function

    About the position:

    The Assistant Director of Education Abroad and International Services is responsible for leading the Study Abroad Programs and assisting with the International Student and Scholarship Programs in the Warfel Center for International Programs and Services at Millersville University. The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Vice President of International Programs and Global Engagement and works in close collaboration with a team to support MU's undergraduate, graduate, English Language Institute, and non-degree international students and the University's J-1 scholars.

    This position involves the day-to-day operation and development of study abroad programs, international student and scholar programming, short term programs, and immigration advising and compliance. Additionally, this position maintains export control compliance for the university and serves as a primary contact for crisis responses related to international students, international scholars, Millersville University study abroad students and faculty members.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Education Abroad Program Management:

    • Serve as the primary Education Abroad Advisor for all study abroad programs including exchange and partners, professional, and faculty-led programs.

    • Lead the marketing and promotion efforts for education abroad participation and define strategies to increase student access to education abroad opportunities through online and print materials, classroom visits, general information sessions, and special events such as the Study Abroad Fair.

    • Responsible for curricular and co-curricular integration for all education abroad programs.

    • Administer daily workflow for the education abroad cycle: Inquiry, Advising, Application, Getting Ready to Go, While Abroad, and Upon Return.

    • Advise and assist in the approval process of new programs, including: MAPS: Marauders Abroad Programs, exchange and partner programs, and affiliated organizations.

    • Provide training meetings for faculty/staff program leaders of education abroad programs on areas such as overall program development, sustainability, and risk management.

    • Administer Millersville scholarships for education abroad.

    • Maintain the overall exchange partnership balance.

    • Lead education abroad program budget planning initiatives to ensure total cost recovery and proper financial policy for all education abroad programs.

    • Serve as a Primary Administrator of MU's education abroad database management tool, Terra Dotta.

    • Responsible for maintaining updated program content on Terra Dotta site including: Program data on brochures and host university/provider application instructions.

    • Engage and coordinate with key administrative and academic constituencies and community stakeholders to support student and faculty success in international programs.

    • Serve as liaison for Fulbright Program on campus.

    Export Control and Risk Management (as linked to Study Abroad):

    • Oversee Export Controls Compliance program for Millersville University.
    • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the risk management and export control policies on international education policies and procedures.
    • Serve as a primary 24/7 contact for crisis management for the International Student & Scholar Services and for the Education Abroad programs.
    • Serve on the MU International Crisis Management Team (ICMT), working collaboratively to manage real and perceived crises abroad, and/or involving international students and scholars in the United States.
    • Serve as the Primary Administrator for risk management software in the event of crises or international incidences requiring communication with/check-ins from student travelers.
    • Serve on the MU International Emergency Response Team (IERT), working collaboratively to manage real and perceived crises abroad, and/or involving international students and scholars in the United States.
    • Maintain the MU International Emergency Response plan according to the policies and procedures.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for all aspects of the university related international travel and programs involving MU students, faculty, and staff.
    • Oversee and maintain risk management and communication software for effective and timely crisis response and communication with global travelers.

    International Student & Scholar Program Assistance:

    • Assist with the overall strategy and development of programming and services to enhance student retention and completion through the international student journey model, including International Student Orientation, academic and cultural advising sessions and workshops, and other student programming and events throughout the year.
    • Assist in the management of the admissions processing, course registration, immigration and program advising for all J visa students.
    • Assist with the management of the incoming International Visiting Scholar Program, including placement, orientation and continued advising.
    • Manage the outgoing Visiting Scholar Program (overseas professional development opportunities for faculty and staff)
    • Assist in the management of the Budget for ISSI and Education Abroad programs
    • Conduct evaluation for continued improvement for IPS programs and services. Recommend changes as appropriate based on analysis.
    • Manage MU's International Index-a database of faculty and staff with interest and expertise in international topics.
    • Assist with Short-Term Programs and the Global Ambassador Program.
    • Assist with inbound short-term programs including program development, participant recruitment, program design and implementation, and marketing and development of new initiatives.
    • Engage and coordinate with key administrative and academic constituencies and community stakeholders to support international student and scholar success.

    Administration:

    • Assist with day-to-day management of office operation including recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and supervision of student employees, interns and graduate assistant.
    • Assist with International Admissions during peak periods of the year, using Slate and other management systems.
    • Assist with efforts in the development and implementation of Office of International Programs and Services special events, including Homecoming, International Education Week and others.
    • Serve as an authorized U.S. Department of Homeland Security Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
    • Assist with budgeting, goal setting, office planning, and special projects.
    • Represent the Office of International Programs and Services at campus, community, and national meetings as requested.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in international education, higher education administration, public administration or related field.

    • Professional work experience in international education.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master degree in international education, higher education administration, public administration or related field.
    • 3 years of professional work experience in international education.
    • Experience using Slate for admissions processing of student applicants
    • Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
    • Experience advising faculty, staff, and students on international education initiatives.
    • Highly developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
    • Fluency in one or more foreign languages.
    • Experience living and/or travelling abroad highly desirable.
