The Honors College is an academic and support hub for academically motivated UNC Charlotte undergraduates, including all members of honors programs, merit scholars, and students seeking endorsement for nationally competitive awards.
Primary Purpose of Position
To advise and coordinate programming for the Honors Bridge Program (HBP), a specialized initiative for high-achieving incoming students who enter UNC Charlotte with 50+ credit hours and expect to graduate in 4 to 5 semesters. This position is committed to engaging HBP students in personal development and self-assessment, orienting them in the requirements and expectations of the Honors College, and guiding their successful transition into honors programs in their field of study.
This position also advises University Honors Program (UHP) students who want to join an honors program in their field of study, aiming to graduate with dual honors (both UHP and in their major) or transition completely into a disciplinary honors program. In support of both the HBP and the UHP advising roles, this position manages the universal honors application platform for continuing students and works closely with honors program directors across campus to maintain access to honors in the field of study.
Additionally, this position provides support for Nationally Competitive Awards applicants, leveraging strong writing and academic advising skills to mentor students across the university through competitive fellowship and scholarship application processes.
This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte in a professional and respectful manner that reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds, working as a collaborative team member with the Honors College staff and reporting to the Director of Honors Advising and Nationally Competitive Awards in the Honors College.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Honors Bridge Program Advising: Advise, onboard, and orient the incoming HBP student cohort. Provide incoming and first-year HBP students with detailed information about curricular requirements (e.g., HONR 3700) and advise them on prerequisite coursework and GPA required for admittance into their destination honors program in their field of study. Utilize strong advising skills to assist individual and/or groups of students in developing their academic plans to complete honors requirements within an accelerated 4 to 5 semester timeline.
UHP Advising: Advising University Honors Program students (called UHPers) who want to do dual honors or switch to honors in the field of study. Provide support during the registration process and assist students as needed.
Liaison with Honors Programs Across Campus: Serve as a primary liaison between the Honors College and Honors Program Directors across all fields of study throughout the University. Maintain active, transparent communication to align honors opportunities with University-wide honors initiatives. Partner with program directors to build an integrated community through regular collaboration, shared advising practices, and co-sponsored academic programming for honors scholars. Collaborate with directors to establish clear application pathways, prerequisite expectations, and advise handoffs for HBP students transitioning into honors in the fields of study.
Nationally Competitive Awards Advising: Working closely with the Director of Honors Advising and Nationally Competitive Awards, support the application and endorsement processes for Nationally Competitive Awards and Fellowships. Utilize strong writing and editing skills to guide applicants through essay drafting, personal statement revisions, proposal development, and interview preparation.
Cross Campus Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the Honors College team, the honors program directors, and relevant partners across UNC Charlotte to facilitate smooth transitions and applications for HBP and UHP students into honors programs in the field of study.
