Department Information

The mission of Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education is to provide exemplary academic administration, accreditation support, and enhanced educational experience for our sponsored programs. We support training programs in providing a welcoming learning environment that fosters continued academic excellence and advancement at both an individual and institutional level. We support our trainees with professional development and research opportunities to grow in self-efficacy and reach their career goals as they explore and augment their personal wellness.

Medical residency and fellowship programs provide future physicians with a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical training experiences, as well as opportunities to engage in medical research and scholarly activity. Currently, the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) sponsors 215 residency and fellowship programs across the state, supporting approximately 1,520 residents and fellows who are training in a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties.

Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Program Quality and Development serves as a strategic leader within the Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME), advancing institutional priorities related to program quality, operational excellence, administrative effectiveness, and statewide program development. This position plays a key role in fostering coordinated and integrated GME operations across IUSM as sponsoring institution, regional campuses, affiliated hospitals, and training programs.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with institutional leadership, hospital executives, regional campus leaders, program leadership, and university partners to provide consultation, guidance, and operational leadership to ensure alignment with accreditation standards, institutional priorities, and evolving workforce and healthcare needs.
  • Serves as a recognized subject matter expert in GME operations, accreditation compliance, and program administration.
  • Leads efforts to evaluate and strengthen statewide partnerships, assess opportunities for program expansion, and supports the integration of newly accredited and developing programs into a cohesive statewide GME structure.
  • Functions with a high degree of autonomy and independent judgment and serves as an institutional resource for program leadership, coordinators, and affiliated stakeholders throughout the state.
  • Provides statewide leadership for residency and fellowship programs by partnering with university, hospital, and program leaders to ensure program quality, accreditation compliance, operational effectiveness, and sustainable growth.
  • Provides strategic leadership for the statewide program coordinator workforce, overseeing onboarding, professional development, mentoring, and engagement initiatives while promoting collaboration, best practices, and operational excellence.
  • Provides strategic leadership for institution-wide initiatives that improve operational effectiveness, drive continuous improvement, and support organizational goals across the GME enterprise.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for assigned staff and project personnel, fostering accountability, collaboration, innovation, and professional growth in support of departmental and institutional goals.

General Responsibilities

  • Leads the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of institutional programs that advance organizational capabilities, strategic priorities, and university objectives.
  • Provides strategic and operational leadership for complex program functions; establishes priorities, develops implementation approaches, and ensures alignment with organizational goals and evolving needs.
  • Exercises advanced professional judgment in interpreting requirements, resolving complex and ambiguous issues, and determining appropriate actions that affect program effectiveness and organizational outcomes.
  • Develops and recommends program frameworks, policies, practices, and operating models that support consistent delivery, sustainable outcomes, and long-term program success.
  • Evaluates program performance through analysis of data, trends, organizational needs, and stakeholder feedback; identifies risks and opportunities and implements improvements that strengthen program impact.
  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships across departments, functional areas, and leadership groups to advance program objectives, align priorities, and facilitate successful implementation of program initiatives.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor on program-related matters; provides consultation, guidance, and recommendations to leaders, stakeholders, and colleagues.
  • Leads complex program initiatives and cross-functional efforts that support achievement of institutional priorities; monitors progress, addresses barriers, and drives successful outcomes.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelors degree.

Preferred

  • Masters degree (preferably in medical education or a related field).

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 5 years in related field.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience applying process improvement methodologies, Lean principles, and project management practices to achieve measurable organizational outcomes.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This role requires regularly anticipated in-state travel to regional sites and Indianapolis-area affiliates. Additional in-state travel may be necessary on an ad hoc basis to support specific meetings, trainings, or other priorities, in addition to limited out-of-state conference travel.

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary

$75,000.00 - $78,000.00 annually
