Position: Assistant Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation
Weeks of Work: Full Time; 52 weeks
Reports to: Director of Athletics & Youth Recreation
JOB GOAL: Under the general supervision of the Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation, this position is responsible for assisting the administration and supervision of Charlotte Public Schools' K-12 athletics and youth recreational sports programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
An individual shall possess, upon application, the following minimal experience or its satisfactory equivalent:
- Bachelor's degree in a leadership related field, preferred.
- Experience in creating, organizing, conducting and administering interscholastic athletics and youth recreation programs, preferred.
- Current special certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED or willing to obtain.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain rapport with students, staff, parents, volunteers and community agencies.
- Must be a highly motivated, action oriented individual who can take charge and get things done and modify when things aren't going as planned.
- Be a professional at all times and present a positive, optimistic attitude as an ambassador for the District.
- Able to oversee and monitor physical activities that may be strenuous, both indoors and out, in all weather conditions, and will include evening and weekend hours.
- Must be able to lift, carry, and manage equipment and supplies.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations.
- High moral character, and good attendance record.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Assistant Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation will be expected to support the Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation in the development and follow through of a vision for success in the Charlotte Public Schools' athletics and youth recreation sports programs. He or she will coordinate efforts with the Director to maintain a collaborative working relationship and ensure a seamless interface within the programming of K-12 athletics and youth recreation.
Athletics & Youth Recreation Programming
- Assist the Director in aligning expectations for students, coaches, and staff from the recreation to Varsity level.
- Serve as a resource person to the principal and coaches in formulation of policies and regulations relative to interscholastic and youth recreation sports.
- File all records relative to interscholastic and youth recreation activities.
- Support the Director in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of all rules and regulations with regard to M.H.S.A.A. and ensure district compliance.
- Coordinate summer camp opportunities and clinics for players and volunteer coaches.
- Maintain inventory of equipment for youth recreation.
- Train and supervise recreation staff and volunteers in program expectations, district standards and safety.
- Facilitate training of youth recreation coaching staff to ensure alignment throughout K-12 athletics.
- Manage a flexible work schedule including being present at interscholastic athletic events, recreation events, and other events as needed or requested.
- Provide assistance and back-up to the Athletic Director as needed.
Game Management
- Contract the services of officials and hire as soon as possible to assure highly competent officials for all interscholastic contests.
- Provide advice and assistance to designated personnel on any matters related to the interscholastic and youth recreation programs - e.g., publicity, transportation, equipment, use and needs of facilities, contest conditions, team pictures, and others.
- Coordinate all athletics on a year-round basis and the use of all athletic facilities. He/she, or their appointed designee, shall supervise the readiness of all contest facilities, equipment, and personnel for interscholastic and youth recreation events.
- Coordination of any part-time staff, or volunteers, and coordination of calendar for all registrations, seasons, tournament events, and other related activities.
- Administer contests and tournaments.
Athletic Internship Programming
- Develop and Implement an athletics internship program to assist in game management activities.
- Reach out to local colleges to explore partnership opportunities.
- Work with central office to execute affiliation agreements with local colleges.
- Create a clear, detailed internship plan for incoming students.
- Train and supervise student interns.
