Job Duties
The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Unemployment Insurance (ADC‑UI) provides executive leadership for Virginia's Unemployment Insurance (UI) program, one of the Commonwealth's most critical public service offerings supporting workers during periods of job loss. Serving as a key member of the VEC leadership team, the ADC‑UI oversees day‑to‑day UI operations and provides strategic direction, governance, and performance oversight across claims administration, employer tax operations, wage reporting, benefits payment, adjudication and appeals, customer service, communications, policy development, federal conformity, and technology modernization.
The ADC‑UI ensures program performance aligned with USDOL standards, including timeliness, quality, payment accuracy, tax operations, program integrity, and audit responsiveness. The role maintains stewardship of the UI Trust Fund in partnership with finance and actuarial experts and ensures separation of duties and compliance with federal and state requirements. The ADC‑UI supervises an existing leadership team and fosters a culture rooted in service, accountability, transparency, innovation, and equity.
