POSITION TITLE:COACH INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS - Assistant High School Boys & Girls Cross Country Coach (Grades 8-12)
POSITION SUMMARY:The Assistant Cross Country Coach is responsible for supporting the Head Coach in training student-athletes, developing endurance and running mechanics and managing team logistics. Coaches foster a positive and inclusive environment for student-athletes, by promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and personal development. The coach will assist in planning practices, managing home meets, and ensure student safety while maintaining the values of sportsmanship and school spirit. The ideal coach will be a great communicator, provide positive feedback, and encourage growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Coaching & Training: Help plan daily workouts, teach distance running strategies, and lead conditioning drills under the head coach's direction. Athlete Development: Monitor runner progress, demonstrate proper pacing and form, and support individual student growth. Safety & Supervision: Ensure athlete safety during practices and meets; manage medical protocols like hydration, first aid, and injury reporting. Team Operations: Supervise team travel to away meets, maintain equipment inventory, and help coordinate event logistics. Compliance & Culture: Enforce school district and state athletic association (such as MIAA or regional equivalents) rules while fostering an inclusive, positive team spirit. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma required; college degree preferred. Experience: Prior experience as a runner or coaching distance running or track and field at the high school or college level. Certifications: Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications, plus state-mandated coaching or concussion courses. Skills: Strong communication abilities, a valid driver''s license for team transport, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather. This position works under the general supervision of the Athletic Director, Principal and Head Cross Country Coach.
This is a stipend position. Practices will be after school from approximately 2:30-4pm. League meets are on weekdays typically beginning at 3:30pm. There will be select weekend meets as well. Coaches must ride the bus to away meets with the team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:High School Diploma
EXPERIENCE: Prior coaching experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS: Knowledge of cross country training methods and race strategies. Ability to motivate and mentor student-athletes. Strong organizational and communication skills. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). Must submit MA Fingerprints, a CORI/SORI and meet school district hiring requirements.
EMPLOYMENT AND BENEFITS: In accordance with Unit A Contract.
