    Are you an experienced accounting leader looking for a high-impact, hybrid role with a premier, highly respected organization in the Hampton Roads area? We are seeking a dynamic Assistant Controller to oversee day-to-day financial operations across several mission-driven foundations supporting higher education, athletics, and alumni programs.

    This pivotal role blends operational leadership with hands-on accounting management (approximately 50/50). Leading a dedicated team of three accounting professionals, you will manage general ledger functions, ensure GAAP compliance, oversee financial statement preparation, and serve as a key financial partner and backup to executive leadership.

    Key Responsibilities

    \n
    • \n
    • Team Leadership & Operations: Supervise day-to-day financial operations and mentor a 3-person team (Staff Accountant, Senior Accountant, and Financial Reporting & Training Manager).
    • \n
    • Financial Reporting & GL Management: Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, general ledger accuracy, complex reconciliations, and the timely preparation of financial statements across multiple foundation entities.

    • Financial Analysis & Budgeting: Perform periodic variance analyses, assist with organizational budget development, and support financial planning.
    • \n
    • Compliance & Governance: Ensure strict adherence to GAAP and non-profit accounting standards, managing general accounting and accounts payable functions.
    • \n
    • Executive Collaboration: Serve as a trusted advisor to management and act as a reliable backup to senior financial executives.

    Required Qualifications

    • \n
    • BS in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • \n
    • 4+ years of core accounting experience (GL, reconciliations, financial reporting)
    • \n
    • Non-profit accounting experience (direct or via public accounting audit clients)
    • \n
    • Formal leadership experience of Accounting personnel
    • \n
