Salary range: $115,000.00 - $140,184.00, based on experience

Senior Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney will effectively prosecute misdemeanors and felony cases in various courts on behalf of the Commonwealth. The attorney will prepare and research criminal cases involving complex issues of constitutional law, evidence and trial strategies in all courts of the Commonwealth by conducting legal research, witness interviews, negotiating with defense counsel, preparing jury instructions and presenting cases at trial. Duties will also include responsibility to first-chair homicide cases as assigned. Establish effective and respectful relationships with office personnel, judicial agencies, victims and witnesses, law enforcement officers and the public. Maintaining accurate files, ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to manage a large caseload and work well in a team environment. Must exhibit steadfast commitment to fairness and public service. Since this office is engaged in Community Prosecution, skills such as innovation, creativity and an ability to build strong partnerships in the community to identify and solve problems is necessary. Will have responsibilities to train and supervise other attorneys, train law enforcement officers, and handle other office management and administrative duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Admission to practice before the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
  • Minimum of 4 years prosecution experience.
