General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Specialized Transportation Director, the Assistant Bus Fleet Technician/Mechanic will perform mechanical service and maintenance of school buses or related equipment as assigned by the Bus Fleet Technician/Mechanic.

Salary:

The full hourly range for this position is $23.95 - $29.14. Offers are made at the entry level of the range.

Assignment:

This is a temporary position working 32-38 hours per week in the month of August 2026.

Regular attendance required: accepting and working the full temporary assignment is an expectation of this position.

Essential Functions/Other Functions

Essential Functions:

  • Perform preventative maintenance and regular school bus safety inspections.
  • Change oil and filters, adjust brakes, lubricate chassis, wheel bearing and other assemblies.
  • Communicate effectively with staff.
  • Perform general tune-ups utilizing diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair and replace seats, latches, and other body components and assemblies.
  • Operate battery chargers, compression gauges, hoists, jacks, pumps, compressors, air tools, presses, air wrenches and other shop tools, equipment and machines require for performing repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Maintain regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Other Functions:

  • Produce and maintain accurate and detailed records of fleet maintenance and service work.
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop and parts room.
  • May be required to drive bus routes on occasion.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year work experience in automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class C minimum, with passenger endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a public sector setting.
  • Experience working on buses.

Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions:

  • Work in shop environment with power tools and equipment and vehicle fluids.
  • Must be able to move or position up to 50 pounds.
  • Must work outdoors in various weather conditions for roadside repairs.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment and manage competing demands.

Employment Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  • Maintain Washington State Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class C, with passenger endorsement.
