Role Overview
Assistant Biologist I is an entry-level professional biologist role responsible for conducting ecological investigations, biological surveys, field monitoring, and environmental data collection to support the protection, restoration, enhancement, and management of wetlands, fisheries, wildlife, and plant resources. The role supports environmental compliance activities, mitigation monitoring, and biological assessments for operations, maintenance, and restoration projects.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct ecological field surveys, biological monitoring, and site assessments.
Perform pre-activity biological surveys and support environmental compliance activities.
Collect, document, map, and analyze biological and environmental data.
Assist in implementing mitigation monitoring plans and overseeing habitat restoration activities.
Evaluate project impacts on sensitive species and habitats and provide recommendations.
Prepare technical reports, biological assessments, data summaries, and correspondence.
Conduct literature reviews and research using scientific databases and environmental resources.
Maintain and operate biological field equipment.
Coordinate with internal stakeholders regarding biological concerns and permit requirements.
Support operations and maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and permit conditions.
Work safely in field environments, including rugged terrain and remote locations.
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Botany, Zoology, Fisheries Science, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, or a related life sciences discipline.
One (1) year of professional biological fieldwork experience; a Master's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
Experience conducting biological surveys, ecological monitoring, field investigations, or environmental studies.
Experience collecting and documenting scientific field data.
Ability to identify local flora and fauna and assess biological resources.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel to field sites as required.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain.
Preferred Experience
Experience supporting stream maintenance, watershed management, habitat restoration, or water utility projects.
Experience with special-status species surveys and nest monitoring.
Knowledge of environmental permitting and regulatory compliance.
Experience using GPS and GIS applications.
Familiarity with California environmental regulations including CEQA, NEPA, CDFW, USFWS, and ESA requirements.
Experience preparing technical environmental reports and impact assessments
