    Middle School Baseball Assistant Coach

    Position Summary

    The Middle School Baseball Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in leading, developing, and mentoring student-athletes in a competitive, positive, and educational baseball program. They also serve as the head coach for the JV team throughout the season. The ideal candidate possesses extensive knowledge of baseball fundamentals, strategy, player development, and game situations, along with the ability to teach and connect effectively with middle school athletes.

    The Assistant Coach will play an active role in planning and conducting practices, developing individual players, preparing for games, managing game situations, and establishing a team culture built on effort, accountability, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.

    The successful candidate will work closely with the Head Coach and other staff members to ensure a consistent approach to instruction, player development, team expectations, and program philosophy.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Baseball Instruction & Player Development

    • Assist in teaching and reinforcing baseball fundamentals, including hitting, pitching, throwing, fielding, catching, base running, and position-specific skills.
    • Provide individualized instruction and constructive feedback to help players improve their skills and understanding of the game.
    • Utilize extensive baseball knowledge to teach game strategy, situational awareness, defensive positioning, pitching strategy, base running, situational hitting, and other aspects of the game.
    • Help identify individual player strengths and areas for improvement.
    • Support the development of players at varying levels of experience and ability.
    • Teach proper mechanics, practice habits, conditioning, and injury-prevention techniques.
    • Help players understand not only how to execute a skill, but also the situations in which that skill should be applied.

    Practice Responsibilities

    • Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting organized, energetic, and purposeful practices.
    • Lead individual drills, position-specific instruction, batting practice, defensive work, pitching development, and game-situation exercises.
    • Provide additional instruction and support to players who need targeted development.
    • Help maintain a positive, focused, and productive practice environment.
    • Ensure players are properly supervised and follow established safety procedures.

    Game Responsibilities

    • Serve as head coach for the JV team throughout the season
    • Assist the Head Coach with game preparation, strategy, and player assignments.
    • Provide knowledgeable in-game observations and strategic input when appropriate.
    • Assist with defensive positioning, substitutions, pitching decisions, base-running strategy, and situational adjustments.
    • Help manage dugout organization, player preparation, and team communication.
    • Monitor player effort, sportsmanship, focus, and adherence to team expectations throughout competition.
    • Maintain a strong understanding of applicable baseball rules and league regulations.

    Team Culture & Leadership

    • Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes both on and off the field.
    • Reinforce the expectations, standards, and philosophy established by the Head Coach.
    • Promote teamwork, accountability, discipline, respect, and sportsmanship.
    • Help create an environment where players are encouraged to compete, learn from mistakes, and continually improve.
    • Build positive and appropriate relationships with student-athletes.
    • Demonstrate professionalism and composure when interacting with players, parents, officials, opponents, and school personnel.

    Collaboration & Communication

    • Work closely with the Head Coach to establish consistent coaching methods, terminology, expectations, and player-development goals.
    • Communicate effectively with coaching staff regarding player progress, concerns, and areas requiring additional attention.
    • Support communication with parents and families as directed by the Head Coach and school administration.
    • Collaborate with other coaches and athletic staff to support the overall athletic program.
    • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism regarding student-athlete information and team matters.

    Qualifications

    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of baseball fundamentals, strategy, rules, and game situations.
    • Demonstrated experience playing or coaching competitive baseball.
    • Ability to effectively teach baseball skills to middle school-aged athletes.
    • Previous coaching experience preferred.
    • Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff.
    • Commitment to student-athlete development, sportsmanship, and character education.
    • Ability to support and implement the Head Coach's program philosophy and expectations.
    • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification.
    • Ability to successfully complete all required school background checks and training.

    Preferred Experience

    • Collegiate, high school, competitive travel, or professional baseball playing experience.
    • Previous middle school or high school coaching experience.
    • Experience working with pitchers, catchers, hitters, or position players.
    • Knowledge of modern player-development techniques and baseball technology, including video analysis and statistical evaluation.
    • Experience with pitching development, hitting instruction, defensive systems, or advanced game strategy.
    • Experience working within a structured school or athletic program.
