Position Summary
The Assistant Baseball Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Baseball Coach in planning, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive baseball program at Bernalillo High School. The Assistant Coach will support the development of student-athletes by providing instruction in baseball skills, promoting teamwork and sportsmanship, maintaining a positive team environment, and supporting the academic and personal growth of student-athletes.
The Assistant Baseball Coach will work collaboratively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, school administration, student-athletes, families, and other coaching staff to ensure the baseball program operates in accordance with district, school, and New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Baseball Coach with planning and implementing practices, games, tournaments, and other team activities.
- Provide instruction and coaching in fundamental baseball skills, techniques, strategies, and game situations.
- Assist with developing individual and team skills appropriate to the abilities and needs of student-athletes.
- Help establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive team environment.
- Promote good sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, responsibility, and appropriate conduct.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and other baseball-related activities.
- Assist with maintaining a safe and organized practice and game environment.
- Assist with equipment inventory, maintenance, storage, and distribution.
- Support the Head Coach in preparing game plans, lineups, drills, and practice schedules.
- Assist with scouting opponents and evaluating team and individual performance as directed by the Head Coach.
- Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, school administration, student-athletes, and parents/guardians.
- Monitor student-athletes' academic progress and encourage them to meet school and eligibility requirements.
- Model professionalism, integrity, and appropriate behavior at all times.
- Follow all district, school, NMAA, and team rules, policies, and procedures.
- Attend required coaches' meetings, professional development, and athletic department activities.
- Complete required training, certifications, and safety requirements.
- Assist with fundraising, team events, community activities, and other program responsibilities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Baseball Coach or Athletic Director.

- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, practices, games, tournaments, and travel as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous baseball playing or coaching experience preferred.
- Previous experience working with high school-aged students or student-athletes preferred.
- Must hold a current New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) coaching license or be able to obtain the required NMPED coaching license prior to the start date.
- Must meet all applicable district and NMAA requirements for athletic coaches.
- Must successfully complete all required background checks, certifications, and trainings prior to or as required for participation in the program.
Physical Requirements
The position requires the ability to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrate and teach baseball skills and drills.
- Lift, carry, and move athletic equipment and supplies.
- Participate in practices and athletic activities as appropriate.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Respond quickly to student-athlete needs and emergency situations.
Work Environment
The Assistant Baseball Coach will work primarily in athletic facilities, including baseball fields, gymnasiums, locker rooms, school facilities, and other locations associated with athletic competitions and activities. The position may require frequent evening and weekend work, travel, and extended hours during the athletic season.
