    Description

    Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Barn Manager to join the Randolph-Macon College Equestrian Center. The Assistant Barn Manager supports the overall operation of the farm, including horse care, pasture and facility maintenance, and supervision of staff. This position works closely with professional staff, veterinarians, farriers, students, boarders, prospective students, and visitors. The ideal candidate has an outstanding working knowledge of horses and the operation of a professional show barn, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to support the Barn Manager in maintaining a safe and well-run facility. The Center is located three miles from our Ashland campus, boasts 70 acres of pasture, has space for 56 horses, and includes an indoor riding arena, two large outdoor areas, and space for riding outside.

    Working Conditions

    Horse care is an ongoing responsibility that must be maintained throughout the year, including weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. As a result, this position is considered essential personnel by the College and may require staff coverage or coordination outside normal business hours to ensure the health and safety of the horses.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The Assistant Barn Manager will assist the Barn Manager in:

    • Overseeing basic farm and pasture maintenance and supervising farm/stable workers, including creating and prioritizing daily tasks and responsibilities.
    • Assisting with staff scheduling for full-time, part-time, and student workers and providing scheduling support in the absence of the Barn Manager.
    • Monitoring horses for emergency wound care, lost shoes, injuries, illness, and other health concerns, including coordinating veterinary and farrier needs.
    • Managing school horses and tending to their daily needs, including feed schedules, special dietary and care needs, pasture rotations, turnout schedules, and necessary veterinary and farrier services.
    • Monitoring supplies and inventory, including feed, shavings, hay, and other barn supplies, and coordinating procurement and purchasing with the Barn Manager.
    • Communicating professionally with boarders, College staff, outside vendors, hay and feed suppliers, farriers, veterinarians, students, prospective students, and visitors to the Equestrian Center.
    • Performing and overseeing farm and facility maintenance, including dragging arenas, maintaining riding rings, cutting grass, and other necessary grounds and barn maintenance.
    • Managing day-to-day safety and security measures and assisting with the preparation and management of horse shows and Equestrian Center events.
    • Assisting the Barn Manager with maintaining accurate and up-to-date records for all horses and the overall daily operation of the Equestrian Center, including other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree preferred.
    • Prior experience managing or working in a professional barn environment required.
    • Experience working with and handling horses required.
    • Experience managing a top competition barn and top competition horses preferred.
    • Exceptional knowledge of horse care and welfare, including the ability to learn the temperament of individual horses and recognize and respond appropriately to safety concerns.
    • Veterinary knowledge and ability to administer IV and IM injections, perform wound care and bandaging, and provide other routine horse care.
    • Ability to make effective decisions in emergency situations involving horses and humans.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks based on general instructions, and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
    • Strong communication and motivational skills, with the ability to work effectively and maintain positive relationships with students, co-workers, visitors, guests, and other members of the College community.
    • Ability to operate several types of machinery, including tractors, front-end loaders, and post hole diggers, as well as drive a pick-up truck with trailer.
