The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time, 12-month faculty position as Assistant/Associate Professor-Director of Veterinary Clinical Skills.
Position Information
The Director of Clinical Skills provides leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Clinical Skills curriculum across the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. This faculty role integrates teaching, curricular leadership, competency-based assessment, simulation-based education, and scholarly activity while providing academic and operational leadership for the Clinical Skills program.
Responsibilities
The Director will ensure that students progressively develop foundational and advanced procedural competencies that prepare them for clinical rotations and entry-level veterinary practice. The position plays a critical role in aligning clinical skills instruction with AVMA COE accreditation standards, student learning outcomes, and the School's mission to prepare practice-ready veterinarians equipped to serve rural, food animal, public health, and underserved communities.
Salary Information
Salary range: $135,000 - $160,000 annually, commensurate with academic rank and experience.

Essential Responsibilities
The Director will:
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver integrated clinical skills and simulation-based instruction across the DVM curriculum. • Establish measurable learning objectives, competency benchmarks, and procedural milestones. • Ensure vertical and horizontal integration of clinical skills training. • Develop instructional materials including laboratory manuals, digital resources, and procedural guides. • Design and oversee Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and other competency-based assessments. • Develop and maintain systems for tracking student procedural competencies. • Provide timely feedback and implement remediation strategies as needed. • Support continuous quality improvement and accreditation reporting (including AVMA COE standards). • Provide leadership and oversight of the Clinical Skills program and laboratory operations. • Manage equipment, models, simulators, supplies, scheduling, and instructional space. • Assist with budgeting, strategic planning, and resource allocation. • Participate in School and University committees and governance activities. • Engage in scholarly activity consistent with faculty rank and School expectations. • Mentor students in professional development and scholarly inquiry. • Participate in service activities supporting the School, University, and veterinary profession. • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited (or equivalent) institution. • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of Maryland. • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical veterinary experience. • Demonstrated experience in clinical teaching, mentorship, or skills instruction.
Preferences:
• Board certification or advanced clinical training in a relevant discipline. • Experience developing or managing a clinical skills or simulation laboratory. • Experience with OSCE development and competency tracking systems. • Prior academic leadership or administrative experience. • Record of scholarship in veterinary education or clinical sciences.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Proficiency in general veterinary clinical procedures, including surgery, anesthesia, dentistry, and core technical skills. • Experience in competency-based veterinary education and assessment design. • Strong leadership, organizational, and administrative skills. • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. • Proficiency with instructional technologies and learning management systems.
Physical Demands:
• May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk. • May require lifting. • Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. • Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.
