Aquatics Safety Coordinator

Hiring Range is $52,364 to $62,555 annually based on qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, this position is responsible for the development, coordination, and oversight of aquatics staff training, certifications, safety standards, compliance requirements, documentation, and operational procedures across all Aquatics facilities. This position also serves as the primary operational leader for the Goodson aquatics facility. Performs duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.
Essential Duties:
- Oversees the safe, efficient, effective, and customer-focused operation of Goodson pool including staff leadership and scheduling, customer service, facility operation, water quality, safety, equipment, maintenance coordination, programming support, special events, purchasing, and budget administration.
- Coordinates and leads new employee orientation, onboarding, in-services, staff meetings, and ongoing professional development for aquatics staff.
- Develops and facilitates training on scanning and surveillance, rescue skills, emergency response, CPR/AED, first aid, rule enforcement, customer service, and facility procedures.
- Develops and maintains training plans, lesson plans, drills, evaluations, and training resources; identifies training needs through observations, incidents, audits, and employee performance.
- Provides coaching, remediation, and additional training when employees need improvement, and supports Aquatics supervisory staff in developing their skills as trainers and mentors.
- Tracks and monitors required employee certifications, qualifications, expiration dates, training attendance, and completion; coordinates certification and recertification courses.
- Monitors compliance with District policies, aquatics procedures, safety standards, and applicable regulations through routine audits, inspections, and review of required documentation.
- Identifies deficiencies and works with aquatics leadership to develop, implement, and document corrective measures; follows up to ensure issues are resolved.
- Coordinates emergency action plan training, mock rescues, emergency drills, and scenario-based training to ensure staff understand emergency procedures, communication protocols, and responsibilities.
- Reviews incidents, accidents, rescues, injuries, and near misses to identify trends, recommend corrective actions, and identify additional training or risk-reduction opportunities.
- Maintains accurate and organized records for training, certifications, compliance, inspections, safety checks, emergency equipment, incidents, and other required operational documentation.
- Monitors completion of required daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal logs and inspections; prepares reports and summaries related to training, certifications, incidents, compliance, audits, and safety trends.
- Develops and maintains standardized forms, checklists, audit tools, documentation processes, and recordkeeping practices consistent with District requirements.
- Conducts routine inspections of aquatics facilities and safety-related operations, including rescue equipment, first-aid supplies, emergency equipment, signage, guard stations, and other required safety resources.
- Coordinates follow-up on safety and compliance deficiencies with aquatics operations, maintenance personnel, and leadership, and assists with internal and external inspections.
- Supports consistent implementation of aquatics procedures across assigned facilities while allowing for facility-specific operational needs.
- Assists with developing, reviewing, updating, and implementing aquatics policies, procedures, SOPs, and safety documentation as requirements or operations change.
- Communicates policy and procedural updates to staff and supervisors, tracks required acknowledgements, and recommends improvements that increase consistency, safety, efficiency, and compliance.
- Serves as a subject-matter resource for aquatics training, safety, emergency response, compliance, and documentation.
- Collaborates with aquatics coordinators, facility operations, maintenance, program staff, and management; communicates training needs, compliance concerns, and safety trends to appropriate leadership.
- Provides coaching and feedback regarding training and compliance expectations and supports a culture of safety, accountability, consistency, and continuous improvement.
- Provides support with daily staff scheduling, shift coverage, last-minute call-outs, facility maintenance coordination, pool operations, mechanical issues, reservations, customer scheduling, and program coordination as needed.
- Remains actively visible and engaged with staff and customers in the facility during hours of operation. Evening and weekend working hours are required on a regular basis.
- Responds tactfully, respectfully and in a timely manner to inquiries and problems in person, through email, phone and mail by providing helpful information and explanations in-line with District policies and procedures. Thoughtfully handles confrontational or stressful interactions.
- Develops and maintains professional relationships with District employees, vendors, various outside user groups and associations to coordinate their programs and special events.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of aquatics recreational services.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
- Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating on-call shifts.

Education and/or Experience:
- Associate's Degree in Recreation Program Management or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- One (1) year related Aquatics and Recreation service experience and customer service. Two (2) years’ experience preferred.
- Previous personnel leadership/supervision preferred.
- Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO)/Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), StarGuard Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificates required upon hire.
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- General knowledge of the philosophies, objectives, practices, and systems of Aquatics, Recreation, and Facility operations management, and their application as related to aquatics facility operations.
- General knowledge of safety and emergency first aid procedures.
- General knowledge of customer service principles.
- General knowledge of establishing and maintaining healthy pool water; pump and filtration operations and chemical feeding equipment.
- General knowledge of the planning and organization of aquatics instruction and water safety programs.
- General knowledge of budget planning and management.
- Skills in swimming, lifeguarding and lifesaving procedures and instruction and water safety programs.
- Skills in recruiting, training, supervising, evaluating, motivating employees.
- Ability to successfully establish and maintain safe and fun pool environments.
- Ability to resolve customer complaints and escalated problems.
- Ability to effectively handle cash-flow and daily cash reports with accuracy and proper handling in adherence to established procedures.
- Ability to safely extricate people from a pool who vary in weight, with or without assistance, at any time.
- Ability to react effectively to all potential mental, physical, and stressful situations inherent to the duties of a First Responder;
- Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Must be able to supervise, coach and evaluate numerous staff on customer service, safety, conflict resolution and problem solving.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, Outlook and Publisher.
- Must be highly motivated and take direction well.
- Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provide outstanding customer service, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and interact with others in a professional manner.
- Ability to work a varied schedule which may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Material and Equipment Used:
- Regularly uses standard office equipment including a personal computer, phone, printer, fax machine, and copier.
- Regularly uses a cash register, credit-card machine, and calculator.
- Also regularly uses and operates first-aid supplies and equipment, pump and filtration equipment, chemical feeding equipment, various pool chemicals, circulation and chlorination equipment, and simple hand-tools.
- This position may be required to drive a personal and/or District motor vehicle to various District and off-site facilities.
Working Environment:
- Primarily works in a busy pool facility environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. May regularly be in water. Pool facility environments can be loud, wet, humid, and have extreme temperature variations.
- May also work in a comfortable office subject to interruptions and background noises.
- Works outdoors subject to variable weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscape.
Physical Requirements:
- Stand, walk, swim, and sit for long periods of time.
- Occasional physical work lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Occasionally required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, squat, climb, crouch or crawl.
- Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment.
- Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Vision acuity to see close-up and at a distance with the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision. Must have 20/20 vision or 20/20 vision corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses.
- Speech communication and hearing to maintain clear and effective communication. Must be able to hear noises either naturally or with electronic auditory assistance equivalent to that of normal conversation up to 30 meters away. Must understand and be understood.
