Description

The Aquatics Director provides leadership, oversight, and daily management of all aquatic operations within the recreation facility. This position is responsible for aquatic staff supervision, scheduling, program development, facility rentals, risk management, safety compliance, and the overall growth and success of aquatics programming.

The Aquatics Director serves as the primary leader for the pool environment, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and engaging experience for members, guests, program participants, and community partners. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, highly organized, and experienced in aquatics operations, with a genuine passion for creating a vibrant and inclusive pool environment. The position also provides operational support to broader recreation center services and programming as needed. Hours may vary from time to time with the possibility of the need to working some nights or weekends.

The Aquatics Director is directly responsible to the Director of Facilities and Recreation Services.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Direct and oversee all day-to-day aquatic operations.
• Develop, manage, and maintain lifeguard and aquatic staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage at all times.
• Supervise lap swim, open swim, aquatic fitness classes, swim instruction, and special events.
• Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate lifeguards and aquatic personnel.
• Coordinate with and hire group fitness instructors for aquatic programming.
• Conduct staff evaluations and support ongoing professional development.
• Develop and expand aquatic programming including lap swim, open swim, water fitness programs, swim lessons, rentals, and special events.
• Identify opportunities to increase community participation and revenue within aquatics.
• Manage scheduling and coordinate rental contracts for aquatic space.
• Coordinate logistics for private rentals and special events.
• Ensure pool area cleanliness, organization, and operational readiness at all times.
• Provide direct lifeguard coverage as operationally necessary (typically 10-15 hours per week).
• Expand operational knowledge into other areas of the recreation center and provide cross-functional support as assigned.
• Assist with drafting contracts, administrative duties, and operational planning as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Associate degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management, Business Administration, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience
• Proven experience in aquatics, recreation, or a related operational environment
• Experience supervising staff and coordinating work schedules

Certifications and/or Licenses:

• Current Lifeguard Certification including CPR/AED and First Aid
• Must obtain and maintain Lifeguard Instructor Certification within six (6) months of hire

Compensation: Starting at or above $51,693 annually (commensurate with skills/experience). Full benefit package including health/dental/vision insurance, retirement, wellness center, educational assistance, WSCC tuition waiver for employee/dependents, generous paid time off.

.PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This job requires the ability to actively lifeguard and supervise aquatic activities for extended periods; continuous standing and walking; frequent gripping, reaching with hands and arms, and repetitive movement; ability to respond quickly in emergency situations; occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Frequently required to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in humid and wet environments.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be exposed to a humid and wet pool environment, pool chemicals, and associated noise levels. The employee may also be required to work outdoors or in varying weather conditions as programming needs dictate.
