Position Summary
The Aquatic Specialist instructs aquatic fitness classes, swim techniques lessons and serves as a lifeguard while assuring the safety of center athletes and guests at all times. The Specialist also assists with ongoing center operations such as promotions, reception, registration, maintenance, and creating a safe, welcoming environment focused on health and wellness for a positive guest experience. The Specialist works collaboratively as part of a team that ensures safe and effective Center operations and programming. As a critical member of the team, the specialist will report to designated leadership appointed by the Executive Director within The Specialists scheduled shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assures the safety of the Center, athletes and guests at all times.
- Apply and follow protocols specific to Cedar Crest College and Falcon Aquatics programming at the Center.
- Instruct aquatic fitness classes and swim technique lessons in various formats and in accordance with established practices
- Serve as a lifeguard to assure safety of athletes in accordance with established protocols
- Assist with media and marketing promotions, reception, registration and creating an overall positive guest and athlete experience
- Respond to inquiries regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees and other issues in an effective manner; initiate problem resolution process if necessary
- Assist athletes throughout the Center as necessary and providing instruction
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with others to meet athlete and guest needs
- Provide coverage within the center when a need arises to assure safety and continuity of programming.
- Assist with maintaining physical plant operations, including, but not limited to cleaning and pool water testing.
- Attend professional development to complete professional level aquatics based educational certification/licensing courses which include Lifeguard Instructor, Aquatic Exercise Association Fitness Certifications, and Aquatics Facility Operator.
- Organize and maintain deck fitness and swim school equipment
- Other duties as assigned by leadership
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Education and Training
- High School diploma (or equivalent) required; Bachelor's degree in recreation, sports management, aquatics or other applicable discipline preferred.
- Previous experience as a fitness instructor in aquatic exercise preferred
- Certification as a lifeguard (Red Cross), First Aid, CPR and AED required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively
- Sound knowledge of aquatic rules, policies and procedures
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and efficiency
- Able to effectively teach and instruct aquatic fitness in various formats
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Able to react and adapt to changing situations appropriately

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Visual and hearing ability to perform all required duties related to the position including visually scan pools and surrounding deck
- Able to lift and move all fitness equipment, with or without assistance
- Able to swim and lead water fitness classes
- Sufficient manual dexterity to operate technology and office equipment.
- Able to carry out emergent, potentially life-saving processes and successfully carry out water rescues
- Able to sit or stand continually to perform essential job functions.
- Able to professionally communicate and interact with a widely diverse population.
- Able and available to work afternoon, evening and weekend hours.
