The Apprentice School is founded on Craftsmanship, Scholarship, and Leadership. Apprentices work in the production environment, take trade related theory classes, rotate through various area, and learn their craft. Leadership opportunities are available to apprentices through extracurricular activities such as SNAME, Jaycees, AAS, etc. and through sports. The Apprentice School has seven athletic teams (football, mens basketball, womens basketball, baseball, co-ed golf, mens wrestling, and womens wrestling). There also is an accelerated foreman training program available called Frontline FAST. Apprentices take the four quarters of World Class Shipbuilding Curriculum (WCSC) during their apprenticeship. They typically attend classes two days a week for eight hours a day; there are twenty-three class sessions per quarter. Apprentices are paid for the time they are in their academic classes, so they are expected to be actively engaged at all times during the class.

Responsibilities of the Apprentice Academic Instructor include the following: Apprentice Academic Instructor

  1. Prepare for instruction for one or more different courses, assist with updating lesson plans and syllabi, handouts, visual aids, etc.

  2. Conduct classes and present instructional material using appropriate instructional strategies, including lecturing, demonstrating, and discussing applicable information. Enforce Apprentice School and company policies.

  3. Evaluate apprentice progress through preparation, administration, and grading of assignments and tests.

  4. Where appropriate, they provide individual assistance, instruction, and retesting opportunities outside normal working hours to apprentices who seek additional assistance and may have received failing grades on course objectives.

  5. Remain current with the latest developments in the teaching areas, including content, instructional methodology, and applications to shipbuilding.

  6. Support other areas of the school (e.g., pre-apprenticeship instruction, Admissions interviewing, etc.).

  7. Maintain appropriate levels of communication and interaction with apprentice craft instructors and lead apprentice craft instructors in the Craft Training areas to maintain and improve the relevance of related academic instruction to craft skills development.

  8. Assist the manager, Academics in administrative duties and with special projects. Administrative duties include such activities as records maintenance, class coordination, proposal of class schedules, and development and maintenance of curriculum and course documentation.

Subject Areas: Apprentice Academic Instructor

To qualify to teach technical core classes, an associate degree from an accredited college/university in the discipline is required and/or scholarly and/or professional achievement must be documented.

To qualify to teach general education classes, at least a bachelor degree from an accredited college/university plus at least 18 graduate credits in the discipline being taught is required.

The anticipated salary range represents the estimated base pay for this role. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors, and may vary from the posted range
