APPLICATIONS ENGINEER II

OVERVIEW

Own and sustain Rochester Sensors' production product portfolio, where design control is maintained in Dallas, including propane and industrial mechanical gauges, reed switch probes, guided wave radar, capacitance, and hall-effect position sensors. The Applications Engineer II manages engineering changes through the ECO/ECN process, improves the cost, quality, and reliability of existing designs, and serves as a technical point of contact for production, quality, and customers across Rochester's global facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own assigned product lines in production, including 3D models, drawings, bills of materials, and product specifications.
• Initiate, manage, and release engineering changes through the ECO/ECN process and ERP system, ensuring documentation is accurate and complete.
• Evaluate proposed changes for form, fit, function, interchangeability, and certification impact before implementation.
• Create and maintain DFMEAs for assigned products and keep them current as designs change.
• Plan and execute verification and validation testing to qualify design changes, and document results in test reports.
• Lead cost reduction and VA/VE projects on existing products through design, material, and supplier changes.
• Investigate field returns, customer complaints, and production issues; drive root cause analysis and corrective action (8D/CAPA) through to design or process fixes.
• Support product certifications and regulatory compliance (UL intrinsic safety, ATEX, CE, RoHS, REACH, Prop 65) as designs change.
• Manage component obsolescence and supplier or material changes, including qualification of alternates.
• Support product transfers between the Dallas, Mexico, Brussels, and UK facilities, and take over ownership of new products from the NPI team at production release.
• Structure and maintain product assemblies and bills of materials in the ERP system, integrating mechanical, electrical, and firmware components and their revisions.
• Provide technical support to production, manufacturing, quality, procurement, and sales, including design-for-manufacturability input and hands-on troubleshooting on the production floor.
• Serve as a technical contact for customers on application questions, product modifications, and issue resolution.
• Support the Quality Management System (QMS) policies and procedures.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 7+ years of technical engineering experience, preferably in sustaining, product, or applications engineering.
• Strong knowledge of engineering data management systems and engineering change order/process flows.
• Proficient in SolidWorks 3D modeling and detailed drawings, including GD&T and tolerance analysis.
• Experience creating DFMEAs and planning and running verification/validation testing.
• Experience with structured root cause analysis methods (8D, 5 Why, fishbone).
• Experience releasing production part drawings and structuring multi-level assemblies and bills of materials in an ERP system.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Hands-on experience troubleshooting mechanical and electromechanical systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Good oral and written business communication skills, including direct communication with customers.
• Experience with product certifications (UL, ATEX, CE) and quality standards (ISO 9001, IATF 16949) a plus.
• Experience with SolidWorks Simulation or other FEA tools a plus.
