POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) Division of the Alamogordo Police Department, in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent;
- Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPSW) or Certified Family Support Worker (CFPSW)* in New Mexico or the ability to be certified at the next testing opportunity;
- Lived experience of recovery from a mental health condition and/or a substance use disorder;
- Valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain within 60 days, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
- Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Desired:
- Experience with case management.
- The New Mexico Credentialing Board and Office of Peer Recovery and Engagement (OPRE) determine minimum qualifications for certifications. Testing eligibility and renewal requirements are subject to change pursuant to the Program.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties
- The CIT Peer Recovery Specialist functions as an advocate, mentor, and guide to cultivate an environment characterized by mutual respect; in contrast to traditional roles, this position leverages personal experience with mental health challenges, substance use recovery, and the navigation of complex systems such as healthcare, housing, or justice systems to support peers on their path toward wellness and independence;
- Works as a part of a mobile crisis team serving people in crisis in Otero County;
- Assists in performing a danger assessment, a crisis assessment, an environmental assessment, and a lethality assessment upon entry to the community situation;
- Assists in performing an on-scene assessment and treatment plan;
- Performs crisis intervention, including de-escalation, crisis planning, and implementation;
- Designs appropriate referral recommendations using available community resources and follow-up;
- Maintains all incident documentation pertaining to the MCRT department;
- Serves as the on-site resource for any relevant clinical information and will be the liaison for collaboration with other involved parties, including families, friends, and other community providers (all under the clinical supervision of an independently licensed clinician);
- Provides case management duties to reduce future crisis response needs;
- Promotes self-care, illness self-management, and wellness and recovery;
- Addresses population of child, adolescent, adult, dual diagnosis, co-occurring, and elderly;
- Works with families and involved persons to de-escalate the situation, make a crisis plan, and enlist cooperation with recommended treatment; and documents interactions;
- Provides education in the community about the agency and all components of CRS when needed;
- Safely operates a City vehicle;
- Provides mentoring to interns and new staff;
- Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
- Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
- Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES
- Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);
- Must be able to work as a team with first responders;
- May be required to work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays;
- Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
