Duties

The High School Counselor supports students in grades 9-12 across academic achievement, post-secondary planning, and personal or social development. This role serves as an advocate for student success, helping guide academic scheduling, college and career readiness, and short-term crisis intervention while working closely with teachers, parents, and administrators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Support: Monitor graduation progress, assist students with course selection, address academic performance challenges, and manage schedule adjustments.

  • College & Career Advising: Guide students through college applications, financial aid (FAFSA), scholarship opportunities, standardized test preparation, and vocational or military pathways.

  • Social & Emotional Guidance: Provide brief individual counseling, deliver immediate support during crisis situations, and address issues like anxiety, peer conflict, or attendance hurdles.

  • Collaboration & Referral: Coordinate with parents, teachers, special education staff, and external mental health professionals to build student support plans.

  • Data & Program Management: Analyze academic data (attendance, grades, test scores) to identify at-risk students and run targeted group interventions or school-wide counseling workshops.

Qualifications

Master's degree in social work, psychology, guidance and counseling, or related field. Professional licensure through ISBE required.
