GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under supervision of Health Director, perform general duties relating to ensuring safety of all citizens from stray, loose, injured, or unlicensed animals.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Answer complaints and calls for assistance regarding stray, loose, unlicensed, and injured animals.
  • Responsible for impounding animals and issuing citations when needed.
  • Investigate animal bites and animals suspicious of carrying rabies.
  • Maintain animal shelterprovides food and water for animals.
  • Securing rodentsand straydomestic animals; disposing of roadkill.
  • Release animals from the shelter in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Destroy animals at the shelter in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  • Complete necessary forms and documentation.
  • Operate tractor, mower, and hand tools while cutting weeds and grass, trimming trees, removing debris from City properties.
  • Perform simple maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Operate insect control equipment.
  • Communicate with the public.
  • Communicate with City and County AttorneysandJudges about cases.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with no minimum experience required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Ability to carry up to 75 pounds.

Physical Requirements:

The work in this position classifies the physical exertion requirements as heavy work involving lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. If someone can do heavy work, we determine that he or she can also do medium, light, and sedentary work. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Visual ability: sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier, computer, etc.; and to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
  • Hearing ability: sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.
  • Speaking ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over the telephone.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
