ANIMAL LABORATORY SPECIALIST I The University of Alabama at Birmingham

General Responsibilities The University of Alabama at Birmingham Temp Services is seeking an Animal Laboratory Specialist to prepare and distribute all enrichment for a variety of species including nonhuman primates, pigs, rabbits, and ferrets. Rotates novel enrichment devices. Develops comprehensive monthly enrichment calendars and submits them for review and implementation. Provides covered species with human interactive enrichment. Maintains inventory of produce. Prepares daily produce. Maintain inventory of enrichment devices. Basic understanding of species-specific behavior. Provides ferrets with exercise/playtime. Rotates rabbits onto floor and provides them with extra enrichment and possibly cleaning these runs if necessary. Prepares non-human primate enclosures and ensures the addition of clean enrichment following enclosure sanitation. Designs, constructs, and/or assembles enrichment devices for all species in conjunction with behaviorist. Meet with veterinarian and Welfare/Behavior manager periodically. Behavior scoring such as alopecia and behavioral observations. Actively stays informed on the latest trends and advancements in enrichment to ensure the highest quality of care and engagement. Utilize video analysis to review and assess primate behavior as needed.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Applies general knowledge of animal biology, husbandry, and animal facility operations to the function of a specialized division of ARP in accordance with requirements and established procedures. Management of species could vary depending upon specialized group but may include working with species within aquatic tanks, isolators, containment, quarantine, etc., and/or support equipment operations.
  2. Maintains knowledge of any training general requirements set forth within ARP and/or related to the specialized area.
  3. Serves as a specialized area contact and as a resource for all staff and guests.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Pay Range: 15.50 - 25.20

Minimum Requirements High School diploma or GED and one 1 year of related experience required.

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations Certified at any level by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) preferred.
