    Animal Research Technician – Laboratory Animal Care

    Onsite | Athens, GA | 12-Month Contract | Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:30 PM

    Sigma, Inc. is seeking an Animal Research Technician to support a leading research organization in Athens, GA. This onsite opportunity is ideal for candidates with experience in animal care, veterinary support, livestock handling, laboratory animal environments, animal husbandry, or research facility operations.

    The Animal Research Technician will provide daily animal care, maintain accurate documentation, support research activities, and ensure compliance with established protocols, safety guidelines, and animal welfare standards.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Perform daily animal husbandry and healthcare activities according to study protocols and organizational procedures
    • Conduct routine animal health observations and promptly communicate health concerns
    • Provide proper care, handling, feeding, and monitoring of research animals
    • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and study-related information
    • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines
    • Support facility sanitation, cleaning procedures, and equipment maintenance activities
    • Assist with sample collection and scientific procedures as required
    • Support necropsy activities and research study requirements
    • Work safely in a laboratory animal research environment under Biosafety Level 1 and Level 2 conditions
    • Maintain compliance with:
      • Animal Welfare Act regulations
      • NIH guidelines
      • AAALAC accreditation requirements
      • Company animal care policies
    • Participate in team meetings, committees, and workgroups as needed
    • Provide support and guidance to junior team members when required

    Required Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Ability to accurately complete documentation and follow detailed procedures
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
    • Ability to recognize and communicate animal health concerns
    • Comfortable working in a research and laboratory environment
    • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including:
      • Standing for extended periods
      • Working in hot, cold, humid, or noisy environments
      • Lifting and moving materials

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with animals
    • Background in:
      • Animal husbandry
      • Veterinary technician support
      • Livestock care
      • Laboratory animal research
      • Animal science
      • Farm or agricultural environments
    • Experience following SOPs and regulated procedures
    • Experience handling animals in a professional or research setting

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs occasionally
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently
    • Comfortable working around animals and livestock-related environments
    • Must not have allergies to animals or livestock/feed dust

    Schedule

    • Monday–Friday
    • 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
    • Minimum 40 hours per week
    • Weekend overtime required approximately once per month
    • May include occasional holidays or additional hours based on business needs
