    Day in the Life

    Step onto the floor at Norlen—part of the Ryerson family that has served the metals industry since 1842—and power up an Amada laser cell. You’ll review job orders and blueprints, dial in machine settings, and run first-article parts. Using calipers and micrometers, you’ll verify accuracy before moving into steady production. Throughout the shift, you’ll load and unload raw sheet and finished parts by forklift, keep the work area clean, perform routine equipment care, follow all safety protocols, and close out with a proper shutdown so the next run starts strong.

    What You’ll Do

    • Set up and operate Amada laser cutting machines for production runs
    • Execute daily startup and shutdown procedures
    • Load raw materials and unload finished parts using a forklift
    • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and job packets
    • Conduct routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on laser equipment and your work area
    • Inspect parts using precision tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.) to ensure dimensional accuracy
    • Follow all company safety policies and procedures
    • Support additional tasks as assigned; duties and responsibilities may change at any time with or without notice

    What You’ll Bring

    • Successful completion of a skills-based assessment covering reading, math, inspection & measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving
    • Minimum 2 years of similar laser or metal fabrication experience preferred
    • Consistent, reliable attendance
    • Comfort with basic math
    • Basic computer literacy
    • Ability to pass a physical requirements exam for vision, hearing, and mobility
    • Enrollment in a registered apprenticeship program included as part of onboarding and new-hire training
